Whats the difference between the two motors? I've got a 1986 Subaru GL wagon and my 4" lift just arrived. I'm a little worried about power and would consider turbocharging down the road.

A search pulled up EA82t heads for sale so I'm assuming those are different but what else? Do they all come with a forged bottom end?

Whats the engine block made out of on these things? I'm an oldschool chevy guy with a 500hp Nova but if I had to guess I would say aluminum?

By the way, what kind of carb will my motor have? It needs a rebuild kit.

G'day luke!

Both motors are made of the same material. The crank and rods may be different and the piston head on the turbo's had a deep dish on it to drop the static compression. The heads are pretty much the same as the NA MPFI units with exception to piping for coolant and maybe an oil line for the turbo. The MPFI block also has a crankcase breather hole and the turbo block has a knock sensor too.
If you're after a real power gain I suggest you look into an EJ motor from the liberty/legacy vehicles. The EJ22 (2.2 litre) will produce the same amount of power as a well tuned stock EA82 turbo - the bonus of the EJ is that it has better low down torque, is easy to work on, has plenty of spares and mods that can easily be done...
Most L owners that lift their subi and run bigger tyres sit on the EA82 and put up with the power loss.
If you've got a turbo motor sorted, give it a go, but I reckon you'll get tired of that and be looking for the next upgrade - many boys from Western Oz have done the same thing, one's for sale now on a car sales website, I can't remember if its carsales.com.au or carsdomain.com.au.

Cheers

Bennie
