What have you done to your car today?

Nachaluva now my engine is like new is the reason I was thinking of.doing it. A supercharger wouldn't be as quick as a turbo but it would give more torque. Probably 50% more through the whole rev range. Plus with 3-5psi boost it won't reduce the life of the engine by much. I was talking to.a.guy with an ej20 running 11psi on the same engine as yours and mine. He has so much torque he has traction issues on the road. Has been running the setup for 120,000km on the stock engine with no upgrades and its been fine. With 3-5 psi and the ability to turn it on or off like ur aircon it woupd give me enough power for all the applications. It would cost less than $700 at the most to do it. But I will look into it more.

Will be interested to so how it pans out taza :)

It would be interesting to see what your insurance company thinks too :iconwink:
I'm guessing it would add a fair bit to the cost of your premium also

I wasn't planning on telling them. lol

The cost might go up abit, considering I get off my P-Plates in a few months though it will start to even out abit more. But the cost has already more than halved since I first got the car :raspberry:

OK that does sound interesting. You do have excellent compression on your engine which is a big factor...I wouldnt even think of boosting a tired engine, unless you wanted to see fireworks lol

Standard EJ20 with 11psi...I would normally have my doubts about the engine's longevity but 120,000kms is a pretty good test. Based on that yeah I think 3-5psi should be fairly safe. Can you could set it up so you can adjust the boost, not just on/off? I'm thinking soft sand up a steep dune...run a bit higher for the hard bit, maybe 8-9psi, then back to 4psi for the beach, etc.

I'd really be interested in how you go...

Yeah some of the results from tests sound pretty good. No boost can not be adjust the boos, its comepletely different from a turbo. Being a SC you donj't have turbo lag, you get your boost depending on the revs of the engine, due to the pulley. The size of the pulley determines how much boost you can have, the smaller the more boost. With a stock Toyota SC14 SC and my engine and stock pulley I would be looking at 4ish PSI boost.

Yeah for soft sand and highway driving it would be great, thats the reason im looking into it. I don't want a race car, just more power for the everyday and offroad tasks. Plus the ability to turn it off means I can still egt my 8l per 100km when cruising on the highway.

You can already get bolt on Raptor chargers but they are $4000+ but the concept is the same.

For anything under 5.5psi boost depending on the SC you don't need and intercooler so just install it where the air filer intake/box/black plastic things are for the intake. Just goes inbetween, hook it upto the crank pulley on the enigne, just like your power steering and air con and power from the battery with a switch inbetween and custom piping for the air intake. All really straight forward. Then if it is having issues or your engine is due to it turn it off or take the belt off the pulley and your back or stock normal :)

Most SC's are only rated at as high as 10-14psi boost, they are completely different from turbos.

Still looking into it but it could be an option and would work much better than a turbo setup offroad.
If I ran at 4psi boost I would have just more than the power output of an EJ25 N/A and a bunch more torque (Aus spec 115kW, 225Nm torque -Until 2005).

This with stock 1st generation Forester ratios (4.11 diffs and 1.447 - 45% low range) would be pretty unstoppable other than open diffs :lildevil:

Was going to do it myself Taza, and still interested.

My concerns related to running a snorkel with a SC, I just couldn't think of a way that wouldnt waste power running both. That was about 2 years ago, back then I made the decision to run a snorkel first and then research the possibility of y piping one on an SC.

Would you believe my snorkel sat in a box for 24 months, that is until today.

What have I done to my car today, finally installed my snorkel!

Awesome news!! Got any pics of the snorkel? What type of snorkel did you go for?

I have read about one other Forester and one other Subaru (running an EJ22) who both have snorkels and superchargers. They don't seem to have any issues. If you are still interested in doing it maybe we could bounce some ideas off each other if your still looking into it.

Was taking to a work mate too on Friday about one of his mates who has a V6 Petrol hilux with a supercharger running low PSI boost. He hasn't had any issues with water and the charger itself

Tjm hilux snorkel (current shape), no pics as yet but will get a couple tommorow. Seems to fit the body shape quite well. There is definately plenty of room in the 2.5 bay fir even the larger raptor style kit, snorkel piping into bay takes up a bit of it's space tho. Smaller kits would be ideal, will follow up with google on the Toyota SC.

Can you post a link to the forester with snorkel and SC, would love to have a read.

Looking forward to seeing the pics :raz:

Now just have the fog lights to fit - look like they will be a real b!tch - and the splash guards.

Looks great Barry :raz:
And may I also say, they did a great job of matching up the colour too :quitar:

Thanks Mr T & Taza.

I provided them with the Subaru colour code. Yes, a good match.

I will put up a separate thread on my experience of fitting the bar and service by SubaXtreme.

At this stage I will say the following:

Fitting instructions supplied were mediocre, mostly relating to how to cut and attach the top section of the old bumper.
This was irrelevant to me, as I have the cast top sections.
NO detail of what needed to be done to mate the cast top sections to the body panels.

Instructions say to fit the reinforcing bar, which TOTALLY supports the 'sports bar' using the mounting screws for the OEM reinforcing bar.

HOWEVER the holes in the SubaXtreme reinforcing bar are larger than those on the OEM.
In short, had to source 'panel washers' late on Christmas eve. A major omission IMO.

NO detail on fitting of fog lights. Virtually impossible to access to attach the mounting screws.
Despite the claim in the 'destructions' that the bar is designed to accommodate the Subaru fog light covers this just doesn't seem possible. Can't be done, whether inserting lights with cover attached OR trying to fit cover when light is in place.

However, the bar is a great piece of gear, and I'm hoping for many years of fun with it!

My 'pride and joy' currently parked in undercover car park at shopping centre - I don't want more hail damage for Christmas!

I know what you mean by having a hard time fitting the bar, splash guards etc :yell:
When I fitted my front bar, it was all guess work & trial by error
As I got mine 2nd hand, the guy I bought it off, had lost all the instructions that came with it  :madred:

I heard about that hail storm on the news :o Looked & sounded like a bad one (hail wise) Hope the damage wasn't too severe where you were :o

My place is ok Mr T. Hail here not as bad as in 2010 when my car was damaged, but wasn't staying to find out. Other parts of Melb north of me copped it pretty bad. Without intending to start a debate over climate change, anthropomorphic or otherwise, it is my anecdotal observation that such 'extreme' events are becoming more frequent in Melbourne.

Not good to hear about the hail mate. Hope the outbacks fine.
You could always move here to WA. No hail just extreme heat in summer :iconwink:

Mine was in Sydenham when the storm hit. All seven vehicles at the lunch were seriously damaged. Will post pics of dulagarl tomorrow perhaps. Bonnet is totalled, roof not too bad, tight and side and tailgate damaged.

Agree Barry that these events are more frequent. Djulpan got hit by a storm like this too.

BTW, new bar looks schweeet
