What have you done to your car today?

Nope- valve stem seals are valve stem seals and cam seals are cam seals- but as you say in different places they may be known as something else. You'd much rather change the front cam seal than valve stem seals

^ Is there another name for the valve stem seals/valve seals? Looking through my Haynes Subaru repair manual. Thinking of trying the stupid idea and doing them myself along with rocker cover gaskets. Cant seem to find the valve seals mentioned unless there another name. Its an american book so....

EDIT: Camshaft oil seals??? same thing?

That is the problem with Haynes manuals, they leave so much out!

Well Scooby, I'm now about 1800km off the bottom end 'use by' - little wonder I'm burning a bit of oil I guess...!

Barry, I doubt your bottom end is on the way out. I'm sure you use your subi similar to Beigewagon who's up near 450k km on the original engine with original headgaskets. Knowing subi's I'd say that your bottom end is fine. If you pulled it down I reckon the Mechanic would re-use the old bearings as there will be little to no wear.

Scooby said 300 thousand miles, not km - so you've got a lot to cover yet to get to the same point. And I highly doubt that you flog your engine like others do (myself probably included).

What you need to be looking for is oil leaks - and as mentioned this may include the valve stem seals. The other thing that can be weaping is the cover plate on the back of the engine behind the flywheel if the newer EJs still have them (I'm sure they do!)

Cheers

Bennie

"Miles" ... silly me! And you are right, I don't flog my baby - 90% of my travel is on freeways on cruise control.

I agree, they are a strong engine, I'm hoping to get mine to 500,000km before needing to do a re-build.

'Off topic' Will PM you to see if you are about this weekend.

Im bloody wondering if ill even get to 170,000km before a rebuild :furious:My love for Subarus is slowly wearing down. But as said they are a strong motor and if I can get to 200,000km with just general maintenance and not any major issues I will be happy.

Any car will get 500,000km if 90% of that is highway and freeway driving and general maintenance is done:raspberry:

Do you offroad your Outback Barry?

Certainly do Taza, however I also commute it between Melb - Geelong every day, so about 800km per week of black stuff for me. Unfortunately don't get to do anywhere near that amount off road. :(

However, 10,000km right through S. E. Qld an outback NSW a couple of years ago. Also trips into the Vic Alps and national parks in NSW. Tow a camper trailer to out of the way spots as well.

The great thing about the Outback is that it truly is a 'one size fits all' car!

Well it wasn't today, but a couple of Months back, just before my trip across the Nullabor. Lack of compression on N° 1 cylinder. Verdict, either head gasket or cracked head. Need to pull enginge down to find out which. Fortunately (due to earlier non issue) I had a spare EA82 in the shed in good nick. Engine change less than one week before towing the camper across the country.

Original motor came out at 485600 kms (approx 303500 miles) having never had the heads off. The car is now up to 499500.

Beigewagon.

Got home from work and could hear hissing from my engine. Look underneath and coolant is p1ssing out. Theres a crack somewhere in the engine block that I have known about for a while but there only even been a drip from it every month or 2.
So now with that, the valve seals nearly gone, the large amounts of burning oil I think I better be asking Santa for a new engine :(

Anyone know where I can get a cheap EJ202...?

Are you certain it is the block? If so, where on the block is the crack? Melbourne is a good place for most things- everything seems to end up there it seems. I can pick up a brand new current model STI short motor from Brisbane for about $2200, so have a look in Brisbane. Unfortunately, I don't know who has the non turbo stuff very well.

Ill get a photo but it sure looks like its coming from the block.

Bugger mate. Hit up some of the wreckers around Perth and see if they've got a short block to suit. It's a fairly easy and quick process to do an overhaul provided you've got all the parts you need at hand. If i were me (and it was me only a month or so ago) I'd just buy a motor off an eBay wrecker, get it sent over and do a straight swap. That's probably the quickest and cheapest way to get you back on the road. A swap hardly takes a day.

Funny enough, I'll be up your way in Gero next week for a few days of work...then a surf ;)

Looks like its not all too major but some work still needs to be done. It will be cheaper to do the work than another engine so I think I will go this way.
If you wanna catch up while your up mate let me know. Id be keen too.

Finally got my other Subaru back on the road. The results are that the new, bigger turbo spools up better than the old one. The torque curve is now flat- as in totally flat- for nearly 2500 RPM, with over 500ft-lbs of torque ATW the whole way. In addition to the quicker spool up it also has an extra 20kw ATW as well. The power curve is almost as impressive as the torque curve- (a good torque curve should result in a good power curve as well) with it bulging nicely through the mid range. This is pretty much exactly what I was trying to achieve with the new turbo, so it is very pleasing. The car is set up for motorkhanas (skidpans) and also to be nice to drive on the road- not out and out power.

No worries ;)
It's just a couple of days work and I'm hoping to only be up there as long as I absolutely need to be. But if there are any waves around I'll be sticking around for an extra day or two. PM ya mobile number dude :iconwink:

Sounds great

Must be very satisfying to get a push in the back lol. Happy cruising
