Hey, first off, I'm a newb. I live in NW WA state. I have a 2002 Subaru Outback 4 cyl w/ auto trans. With that said, here's my question

I'd like about 3" of lift underneath it. I'm not a fabricator by any means so I'll need an off-the-shelf lift kit. Obviously I don't want to kill my axle shafts or stress components too much, so I want a kit that takes that into consideration. I've thought about doing a spacer lift, but I'd like a little more than that if I can find it. Also, with fender trimming, what tire size can I fit with a 3" lift?

the biggest tire you'll ever get on 16" rims without major work is 215/70/16. to do that you will have to cut a bit of plastic trim behind the back wheel. that will only give you a couple of mil's between the wheel and the bottom of the arch. you may also get some slight rub in front at full lock. 2" strut blocks plus 20-30mm raised springs are quite common over here as i think 3" blocks can cause probs with the increased angle on the CV's. i think i saw somewhere that a company in the States were making lifts now? not too sure, someone might remember.

I think you'll only find two US manufacturers for lift kits; Jackson Rally make a 1" lift, I couldn't find a direct link but if you google Jackson Rally you'll find threads on forums about them. Allied Armament is the other, just be prepared to pay, $900, and wait, I've heard of folks waiting a year to get stuff from them.

ok guys, talked to the person who lives 5 minutes away from me that makes lift kits for EA series Subarus. He makes drop brackets, modifies the knuckles, and makes strut spacers. He says that if he can look at the car, he might be able to make a 3" lift (that's 5.5" for a regular Legacy) for around $500.

How many people would be interested in a kit? I'm sure I could get on the fabricator's good side and bring a group buy offer. Then $500 would almost be a for sure price. It seems like a low-end estimate to me.

Welcome back! where have you been mate? i was thinking of sending out the mountain rescue:poke::lol:
I've still been lurking here off and on. Rest assured, I've still been taking some offroad trips in the Fozza, I just don't ever have time to write trip reports.

As to the original topic, I can't help you with a group buy, because I have the wrong vehicle, but good luck. My recomendation is a 4" lift, consisting of 2" "body" lift and a 2" suspension lift. This would need 4" strut top blocks, and a whole mess of 2" spacers to move the suspension mounts downward (body upward). The suspension lift gets you more clearance under most everything, and the body lift gives you extra clearance for the fuel tanks, front and rear overhangs, and the door sills. Everything listed, I've hit on the ground/rocks.
