If you want a Forester but don't want to pay the price or go to jail then one that "doesn't run" is the answer for you! If its been sitting around for a while and the seller says it "doesn't run" make sure to ask if it did run before sitting around, if the answer is yes then try start it with aerostart or spraying fuel directly into the throttle body, if it runs, this thread will explain why it probably doesn't normally!

The SG Foresters have an issue of the fuel tanks filling with stale and solid fuel if they sit around and are not used which some people will think is rust, while this is partially true its not as big of a problem as you might think.
It's as simple and taking out the tank (which isn't really that simple) and either cleaning it with methylated spirits or buying a new tank (wreckers fuel tank will probably have the same problem as yours!). Then replace both fuel filters as they will be like rocks and replace the fuel pump. Clean up the fuel sender units with a wire brush then blow out the fuel lines with compressed air. (make sure they are disconnected at the engine) After re-installing the fuel tank, fill it with fresh fuel and prime the pump a few times. This should fix the "not running" issue.

This information has been sourced from my own experience with my $500 Forester which didn't start when bought and I have seen other SG Forester tanks with the same problem. Hope this can help someone either buying a Forester or fixing their own one!
