Yes, California has an outback called the Mojave (moh-hah-vay) Desert. One of my favorite spots is near a military bombing range, and apparently the military (I'm not sure if it's the Air Force or Naval Weapons Station) likes it so much they're expanding their borders to encompass it. No more camping near my favorite dry lake beds for me. :sad:

A rare rain storm blew through.
A young Mojave Green rattlesnake:
A state park ranger told me you have about 7 hours to live if you don't get treatment for a bite from one of these. This little guy was only about a foot long, but they can get well over 7 feet.
Does this landscape look familiar to those of you down under?

It's either a goat or an ancient horned dachshund.
Here's one of two endangered desert tortoises we saw that day:
Here's the other as he strolled along the road in the rain:

The dry lakes we stayed at used to have targets placed on the during WWII for strafing practice. Here are some of the souvenirs we found (.50 caliber and 20 mm links and shells):
