Well, leaks actually.

Tiny pinhole leaks, I've only found a few of them. I have the Kanga Hurricane 14 roof pouch, had it for 2 years and it was 2-3 years old when I got my hands on it used.

I've gotten more than my money out of it, this is the first time it's ever leaked. I've nixed the idea of attempting to fix it for several reasons, so it's time to replace.

I have considered the idea of going with an X-Cargo box from Sears. The Hurricane 14 has a 14 cubic foot capacity, while the box has 20. Also, really no risk of the box leaking and if it does it would be a simple fix (most likely a new seal).

So I have a couple of questions:

  1. How sturdy are these boxes? My Kanga has stood up to being beaten by tree limbs and such when getting into tighter camping areas. The box has got to be able to take a beating too.
  2. Are the mounting points on the box good? I was disappointed to see that Kanga took the number of straps on their bags from 4 to 2.

  3. Do you think the box would look completely ridiculous in my basket? I need to go double check measurements, but I'm assuming it'll fit. I'm not going to take the basket down, it's a handy mounting point for other accessories and lights.

The prices aren't exact, the box will cost me $90 more if I buy new.

What do you guys think? Can the box withstand what I will put it threw without falling apart or getting holes? Will it look silly in my basket?

I'm all ears.

Have you take a look at any of these for a potential Smash?

The Rola Platypus looks nice... I think any soft side bag I got would get a treatment of waterproofing on the seams.

THey have some hard side carriers in there too... I think they have free shipping at that place too... seems like you can't beat their prices.

My parents have an X-Cargo... its a half decent box, but it is not built very sturdy... they have broken the latches on it several times, needing replacements... i dont believe it has a weather seal on it, just relies on the pressure from the latches... and the plastic is not all that sturdy itself... it bends without much pressure... i dont know if i would trust it as a basher...
