Trouble shifting between 3rd and drive

I have a problem with my 1998 Outback every now and again it goes through 1st, 2nd and 3rd but gets stuck in 3rd gear and does not change in to drive even if I give it more gas. It does eventually change in to drive and it only happens once or twice a week any ideas what could be the cause of this ?

Give it a good flush with fresh trans fluid, then refill.

If problems persist - consult a trans expert.

Is the check engine light on? If so you'll need to get the code.

This will also reset the TCM (Transmission Control Module)

My money is on the ATF, I bet it's never been flushed. Do a full flush (not drain & refill, needs to be a full flush. Plenty of vids on YouTube how to do it)

Could be a solenoïd too...but do the full flush first
