In the process of removing the stock sump guard yesterday I saw that there is a facility to drain the oil without having to remove the sump guard. I wasn't looking to drain the oil but I sought to remove the 5 screws for a trial run and was only able to unscrew 1 of the 5. So, if I was trying to drain the oil I would have had to remove the sump guard completely.

Is there an art to unscrewing these things? Once I had removed the sump guard completely I was able to hold the other side to stop the spinning but when the sump guard is in place this is impossible. Has anyone been able to unscrew these things and how did they do it? Maybe I just need a better technique!

Get some trim removal tools and with the forked tools you slip one under the inner piece to release it then the outer piece will come out.

Thanks Kevin. Are they not designed to be unscrewed at all even though it looks like you just use a Phillips head screwdriver? Also, I am a bit ignorant... would I just go to an auto parts store and ask for some trim removal tools? Maybe there is a kit? I have never seen them!

Only of use if you don't change your filter every time you change the oil.. I can't see the point of them myself.

SMan - I think the Philips head is for installing rather than removing and yep any auto store should have the removal tools; just google "trim removal tool" and you'll see lots.

See my rant "Why I hate body clips" ...

You need to turn the centre 1/4 turn to release the centre pin. In theory, this causes it to pop out slightly. Then use the trim removal tool set to remove the clips.

The only good thing about these things is that a decent trim removal kit only costs about $10-20 ...
Otherwise, body clips have no redeeming features IMNSHO ...

Ok great I will give it a go. I just had a go with a flat screwdriver as I thought maybe they would just pop out like the other clips on the sump guard. No luck using that method!

They are not a sump guard. They are a splash tray, and offer no protection for the sump.
