Thought I'd share a few pics from my trip to Birdsville and Outback QLD a few months back. It was a great trip - the Foz performed admirably.

After heading off from Sydney we stopped over in Dubbo for the night. The next morning we went to Dubbo Aldi to buy drinking water for the trip and found they had the good old Aldi brand maxtrax in stock - so we happily grabbed them since we knew the desert was gonna be wet.

2nd night was spent in Bourke, had a really nice cabin at Kidman's Camp. Next morning we headed up the Dowling Track to Hungerford then onto Cunnamulla for our 3rd night.

The Dowling Track (NSW side heading toward QLD):

From Cunnamulla we continued up the damp Dowling Track whilst receiving regular rain showers. We dropped in at the Toompine Hotel for lunch. I should mention that the hospitality is great - friendly owners, cold drinks and funny banter.

Toompine Hotel:

From Toompine we headed north with showers increasing during the last 50km of Dowling Track into Quilpie where we grabbed a refuel before continuing on to spend our 4th night in Eromanga. The Eromanga pub is one of those outback oases with great hospitality that you just don't imagine possible somewhere so remote and harsh. Their rooms are remarkably comfortable and their setting at the rear of the hotel overlooks a green bushy scrub by the Wilson River.....bloody nice. The food was good too.

View from the motel-style rooms at the back of the Eromanga Hotel:

Coming out of Eromanga the road passed through various pastoral leases and stations, then it was on to Windorah where we camped by the Cooper. The feeling of isolation was starting to kick in here, so we phoned our parents using the satphone.

From Windorah the terrain became quite desert-like. There was some great scenery between Windorah and Birdsville.

In Birdsville we grabbed nice spot by the Diamantina River down at the town common - it was dead quiet, we only had one neighbour camped about 300m away.

The next morning we thought we'd spend the day exploring the dunes in the Munga-Thirri National Park.

On approach to Big Red, we had another puddle to cross. At one point it got a tad hairy without a snorkel:

Ok so didn't quite have the revs to make it right up that time, so here's the 2nd (and successful) attempt at Big Red:

The next morning we made the decision to head back into the Simpson, as far as we could drive in a few hours, to camp on a dune for a night. We went into Birdsville and grabbed some supplies and coffee (faaaarking bakery tried to charge me $8 for a triple shot short black), never going there again! Whilst driving past the pub I noticed a heavily modified OB which I'm sure someone from ORS must recognise. It had a rear chop done so was appearing to be almost like a ute.
Check out the photos:

Great report and pics - thanks for sharing!

Awesome!

You did it just before we did. You got some of the flooding which by the time we got to that area had started to disappear. That water crossing just before Big Red where the front right wheel dipped down into a hole was a bit touch & go!:eek:

I didn't go to the Bakery at Birdsville, I hear it is very nice but very expensive lol.

Some great pics! Did you get any in the Simpson Desert in the afternoon? I wasn't expecting how blood red the sand goes with the afternoon sun

Hehe - yeh the water crossing near Big Red gave me a micro freakout, the camera wasn't quite in the right spot but from the driver's seat I just felt the front right go down and just keep going down until the wave came over and I felt traction in that corner disappear....

Then we got that little surge forward as the wheels bit in and we were back up out of the hole, the engine didn't hesitate, no lights came on, and you get that little grin and a bit of a giggle in your ribs as you power on.

Here are some more photos of the Simpson in the afternoon, only thing was it was overcast so the reds went silvery. My Nikon captures the colours fairly neutrally whereas my partner's Olympus can sometimes give a dull image but it has a vivid mode which really brings up the reds but some purists may consider vivid mode too saturated. I kinda like it for the odd shot.

Shame you didn't get that setting sun on blood red sand. It's simple, you'll have to go back! :iconwink:

I like the 3G/4G antenna, how effective was it?

Great shots - its such awesome country.

... and so green !

The next morning after camping on top of the dune we headed back east. We took a few detours from the main track which found us exploring some nice Simpson scenery.

Ahh such pleasant driving....makes me want to go back!

Cheers mate.

By the way - Nacha, the antenna works pretty well. I can get signal in places where I shouldn't. We were about 60km from Birdsville but our elevation on the dune helped. We only managed one bar of 3G but that's plenty enough to catch news, weather, do some instagramming and get in touch with family to let them know you are somewhere surreal.

.....and yes! I will definitely be back. Bad flooding stopped us from doing the full Simpson crossing which I've been wanting to do for years.

Here's a bit of red sand. Some digital cheating was used:

On the way back to Birdsville we took the middle track up Big Red just for a bit more of a challenge, I had seen a lot of you guys do it beforehand so I knew it was possible. The first go I didn't quite have enough revs, but 2nd time just flew up.

Nice climb up Big Red ! Did you deflate the tires and did you have any puncture with them ? Wet sand is more homogeny than dry sand but a Subie climbs anyway !

I had the tyres around 20 psi. Anything higher is quite uncomfortable and there is still option to go lower if we hit somewhere slippery. Fuel economy was 14 l / 100 km on the sand dunes which is great considering only the lowest gears are used. With the largest dunes on the eastern end, I imagine economy would improve once the big dunes are out of the way.

Not a single puncture. Not even a mark. The tyres still look new.

Hehe yeh, revs are your friend .

That antenna is a good idea.

Big Red is pretty amazing! Trying to work out that track up Big Red, is that on the Birdsville side?

No not the Birdsville side, we were heading west to east towards Birdsville. You'd probably remember the easiest track (ie: the one with the left hander at the end) was on your right as you approach Big Red. The one in the video was the track two to the left of that one - making it pretty much the middle track.

Dunno about economy improving further west -- I recall there are fewer big dunes, but they're more frequent, and there are fewer large swales between them.. tends to be more up and down dune driving in places.
