Thought I'd share a few pics from my trip to Birdsville and Outback QLD a few months back. It was a great trip - the Foz performed admirably.
After heading off from Sydney we stopped over in Dubbo for the night. The next morning we went to Dubbo Aldi to buy drinking water for the trip and found they had the good old Aldi brand maxtrax in stock - so we happily grabbed them since we knew the desert was gonna be wet.
2nd night was spent in Bourke, had a really nice cabin at Kidman's Camp. Next morning we headed up the Dowling Track to Hungerford then onto Cunnamulla for our 3rd night.
The Dowling Track (NSW side heading toward QLD):
The NSW - QLD border on the Dowling Track at Hungerford:
From Cunnamulla we continued up the damp Dowling Track whilst receiving regular rain showers. We dropped in at the Toompine Hotel for lunch. I should mention that the hospitality is great - friendly owners, cold drinks and funny banter.
Toompine Hotel:
From Toompine we headed north with showers increasing during the last 50km of Dowling Track into Quilpie where we grabbed a refuel before continuing on to spend our 4th night in Eromanga. The Eromanga pub is one of those outback oases with great hospitality that you just don't imagine possible somewhere so remote and harsh. Their rooms are remarkably comfortable and their setting at the rear of the hotel overlooks a green bushy scrub by the Wilson River.....bloody nice. The food was good too.
View from the motel-style rooms at the back of the Eromanga Hotel:
Coming out of Eromanga the road passed through various pastoral leases and stations, then it was on to Windorah where we camped by the Cooper. The feeling of isolation was starting to kick in here, so we phoned our parents using the satphone.

Sunset by Cooper Creek near Windorah:
From Windorah the terrain became quite desert-like. There was some great scenery between Windorah and Birdsville.
The road from Windorah to Birdsville:
Birdsville:
In Birdsville we grabbed nice spot by the Diamantina River down at the town common - it was dead quiet, we only had one neighbour camped about 300m away.

The next morning we thought we'd spend the day exploring the dunes in the Munga-Thirri National Park.
