Hi Guys, I'm new to this forum and I'm shopping tires for my mom's 2010 Forrester. She lives 4 hours away in northern Michigan (USA) and goes off road & 2 tracking way to much for an 81 year old woman. I would really like an A/T tire since she just blew an all season tire on one of her recent 2 track outings coming home from the doctors office. I know her car is the non-turbo charged 2L with an automatic transmission. The closest to stock size A/T tire I've found is the Yokohama Geolandar AT/s 225/60r-17. Since I can't keep her out of the woods and off the 2 tracks, I would at least like her car outfitted with a tire more suitable for my peace of mind & her safety! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again, Kevin.

If you can get 5 16 inch Forester rims you can change to 215-65-16 which is essentially the same size.

The 60 series in the 17 inch is a bigger tyre so you would want to (have to) replace the spare.

you can check using a tyre size calculator such as:

https://tiresize.com/comparison/

Also 16 inch tyres are generally a cheaper option to 17 inch.

I run 225/60R17s on my stock height 2012 SH Forester with no issues at all. There is no rubbing and the car sits slightly higher than it did when I was running the stock 225/55R17s. As havachat has said above, you will need to replace the spare tyre with the same size as there is a change in the overall rolling diameter of the bigger tyres which will upset the diff/s if you ever need to use the stock spare.

Thanks HC & Tigger. I am also considering the 225/60 17" for SWMBO's 2010 SH.

Yokohama have a 'four for price of three' going ATM. Makes five affordable. I think maybe Bridgestones have got a similar deal going too.

I am also almost due for some new tyres for my SH - I am thinking of staying with the Geolanders because I have experience with them.

If it were up to me though, I would be getting BFG K02s for it in 215/70R16 but the Husband says it must stay stock so I am just happy to sneak the 60 profile tyres on there for a slightly taller ride ;)

Yeah, mate, same problem here. Also, my SWMBO is never going to take RonnyRoo further off the bitumen than the side of the road. Methinks the higher profile will give a better ride, and it can't hurt the handling and body roll - both of which are pretty ordinary IMHO ...

Re: fitting 225/60r-17 Geolander AT/s to 2010 Forrester

Hi guys, thanks for all the responses! I figured the upsize from her stock 225/55r-17 would negate her using her stock spare. So, I have a couple more questions: 1) What is the minimum size she would need for her spare & will it fit under her car if she upsized to the 225/60r-17? 2) If she did go with this upsize, will she notice a more sluggish response since she has the smaller, non turbo 2L? 3) Are most of you confident that this size will fit her stock 2010 Forester with no issues? I know that is a tough one, but I had to ask since I am hesitant to order them and have fitment issues. Thank you again for sharing your time & knowledge! Kevin.

1) My spare 225/60R17 fits in my SH Foresters wheel well with no problems, the boot floor still sits level etc.

2) I cannot comment on this as my SH Forester is a 2.0L Turbo Diesel and is a tourquey little beast - I have to say that I felt no real difference in response when changing from the 55 profile to the 60 profile - it could be a different story for the NA though.

3) I have a 2012 SH Forester Diesel which is the Premium variant. As far as I know, the only differences between my suspension set up and what you would have is that my Forester has self leveling struts in the rear but I do note that my SH Forester is the facelift model of the SH Forester range so there may have been a slight suspension change in the change of model but I don't think so.

I have no rubbing issues at all - even on full lock.

Thanks Tigger for your responses! I wish she had the diesel! I think I have enough info to go over the possible pros & cons with her and make a decision. She's been threatening to go buy her own tires if I don't come up with a decision soon! If it were mine, I'd buy some 16" rims and mount some General Grabber AT/2's. I have them on 3 other vehicles and they transformed them, both on 2 tracks & deep snow. Unfortunately, she likes the 17" stock rims. Thank you again! Kevin.

The sizes you first mention will give you a 11.5mm increase in clearance and make you speedo read closer by 3kph to correct ( they are optimistic stock). They WILL ride better. 55 profile tyres( and lower) are awfull on all but billiard table smooth roads. You will find an improvement in the aweful tracking effect that subies have ( get a all zero wheel alignment done at the same time. It will be like a new car)
