Bit of a trip, south through Nowra,Neriga,Braidwood,Cooma, and back via Braidwood,Marulan,Bundeena.

Started off easter Thursday afternoon, warning (for future reference): The Princess Hwy is a parking lot going through Nowra btw 3-5pm
Headed off towards Braidwood/Turpentine Rd.
Getting near dark about Tiangara Falls, start looking for a suitable off track for somewhere to bush camp, theres quite a few.
Found a good spot a couple hundred meters from the road. The Turpentine road is unsealled to this point yet.
Camp oven meal of steak and potatoes - yumm

After a good breakfast, headed off towards Sassafras. Here you can now see the massive works that are progressing to seal the Turpentine road,
and the blot in what was once a unique landscape,
compare the pic from a few years ago

to now....

Can't believe there wasn't some protest about this, surely couldv'e resumed some land elsewhere for this highway!

The object of the first part of the trip was to get to WogWog camp/parking area to join up with some other bush walkers for a few
days bush bashing in the Budawangs....

Who can guess the name of the summit in the distance?
Been there?

Anyone else here into extreme bushbashing? Gaiters, long sleeves and pigskin gloves come highly recommended.....

Anyway after some days of excellent company, as this is a subaru car forum, onwards destination Cooma...
Good thing about Easter Weekend is the Driver reviver sites around, this one in Braidwood, excellent for a free cuppa.
and steak sandwiches (which you pay for)

Well its getting dark, and got the Oziexplorer waypoints set up to get me to a camp site i'ved used before near Pikes Saddle.
Heading out of Braidwood on Captains Flat Road. 1st way point, continue straight ahead Krawarree Road (unsealled).
Travelling about 70-80kph now, scanning the road sides for roos......
2nd waypoint,Krawarree Rd + Jerrabattgulla Rd, continue Krawarre Rd.
3rd wp, Big Hole turnoff, its only ~2km to the camp area, so go have a looksee. Yup, quite a few campers here, but i've never liked
this spot much.....
4th wp is about an hour+ further on, at Currenbene Ck...thats the camp for the night.

This is btw, the track from this side that goes to Bendethera camp area, i'm not gonna go there in the OBW,
the rock jumps ups, about oh 3km in are murderous, seriously need diff locks there....AWD and open diffs - forget it.
I'v been told the way in from Moruya is much easier....

Haven't seen one of these wallabies before....pretty face huh?
mg5245.jpg

It wasn't too bothered about my presence as it was keen on eating the blackberries,
did many shots, but the early morning light did make it difficult

Headed off, towards Nimmitabel. Baadja Road, then Tuross Road. Drove in 5km to Tuross Falls, but looking at the state of my
fuel indication, and not being familiar yet with its nuiances, 3 points off empty, thought prudence might be best to continue
to next fuel stop. On to Kybeyan road, which turns sealed about 10km? from Nimmitabel.
Turns out theres no fuel here, but another driver survivor site.... Next stop a farm outside Cooma for 2 days.
The fuel indicator was about 1point below Empty when I filled, 44litres, soooo, there s still plenty of fuel in it yet, hmmmm.

From Cooma, Numeralla, heading for Tuross Road, and the turnoff to the falls camp area.
Gees how things change, theres a pit toilet and picnic tables here!!
mg5463.jpg

In the morning, go for a walk to cascades view, and then further on Tuross Falls. Gosh viewing platforms and all!!
Well stuff that, as i'm a bit of the not so well trodden path, so a bush bash down to the bottom of the falls.....
Met a snake on the way down, well, I saw it peering outa a dark crevice about 1.5m away. Hmm, such big eyes were watching me intently,
i estimated about 2in between the eyes, thats a Big snake, and can make out its mostly gray, so i'm guessing its a broadhead
snake...anyway making a bargain, I leave it alone, and it leaves me alone.
It was still there on the way back up, well thats good, at least I didn't sorta need to wittingly check over every rock clamber...

Heading off back to Braidswood, getting there in the dark, but the lovely Bakery shop always seems to be open till late, whilst everything else is closed....
and doing good trading.
Haven't had donuts for years, yum choci donuts....

really!?

hey fredsub, nice report mate.great way to spend easter. i know what you mean about Nowra. cant believe they hav'nt fixed it. oh and the name of the peak on top of pigeon house mountain? the NIPPLE. i've actually walk that one. long hike:)

Thanks Eden,
yeah I thought parking lot traffic jams only belong in Sydney:lol:

btw,I wouldn't call pigeon Hse a long hike....i'll have to do that again too, with the newish DigiCam and drag the tripod along:twisted: incredible views from up there on a clear day, almost as good as Mt Warning.

Excellent trip report and pics fredsub!!! However, sad to see that nice gravel road getting covered in tarmac.

Great trip report & pics fredsub, thanks for sharing. :)

I'll also second what carljwnc said in that it's a shame that they are covering a nice gravel road with tar. :(

Regards
Mr Turbo

Nice report mate,

Probably right about standard OB and Bendethera. saw some Caravans down there last time. Probably bump into you one day, that exact trip is one I have done a few times and love it to bits ( When coming from Moruya through Araluen to Pambula )... Dont ask why, I get bored easily so need to spice up destinations...

, it must be easier now...
I was there 3years ago and met this

they were bringing in the huge rock hammers too to do something about the rock jump ups. The bloke there reckoned its all those 4wds pulling trailers that do the most damage.

I did a Part II to the opening topic, since i was rudely interrupted by the char limit, but that moderator approval reared its ugly head again, whats with that?

The 'moderator approval' is some kind of intermittent glitch. If it does happen, I'd say just go on with the post and one of us will try to catch it pretty quick. You could also send one of us a PM and we might get to it quicker. We apologize, and are trying to get it fixed. It seems to be mostly happening on longer posts and/or posts with lots of pics.

Part II, attempt #2, fortunately i saved it prior, so simple c&p

Now theres some bush camping areas between here and Marulan - oh i'm still trying to find some of the ones i used in the past, before
GPS and digi cams....
Theres one spot at Warri Bridge, but by god its noisy from traffic. theres a good bit of 4wd wheeling you can do about there tho.
Anyway, Mayfield Rd off Kings Hwy.
There should be a area where the road nears the ShoalHaven river, but couldn't really see a spot. Continuing, get to Stewards Crossing Rd.
All the time i'm tracking my position on oziexplorer....
About 10km to where this road then meets the Shoalhaven. This spot turns out to be a beaut camp spot...actually i'm not real sure i've been here before?

Need to come here again in warmer months, as its got excellent swimming, the river is really deep and wide, but too too cold to stay in for more than
a few minutes. Looks like can do some 4wding too, but since didn't have a compressor with me, didn't really try much.

Next stop is Marulan and towards home.

Hope you enjoyed the trip report.
It shows theres much more scenic way to get to Cooma than the highways...give it a go.
And theres lots of interesting places to turn off. The Big Hole is worth a look for example.
Even though theres alot of unsealed road travel, average fuel consumption was still about 10lt/100km,
average speed is lower, 70-80kph, only some 100kph, but then your doing it for the scenery so why
think about zipping through it at 110kph? and its something different.
stop and do pics anywhere...

looks like the work around is to submit a small reply, then edit it with what you want........
