I'm finding myself getting used to, and maybe even starting to like the look of the Gen 5 2016 Outback. It looks great in black and even better with a lift and chunky rubber.

Here's a few examples I found on the intergooglewebs:

Has anyone on here got one of these yet?

How do they go?

I'm curious to know how the diesel goes with the CVT, and how the vehicle performs off road in general.

Has Subaru overcome the issue with older CVTs tending to "give up" if too much resistance is on the wheels - ie: in soft sand when starting from standstill?

I really want to like this car....

Hi
This is mine running the Lachute performance lift kit and bf Goodrich Ko2

Haven't heard about issues. Haven't heard about performance on trails I recognize either. But I have read a lot of good words for deep sand and beach performance on the OB forum.

In the examples you reference, was that really CVT giving up or was it driver forgetting to turn "VDC" off (or TC, the label is misleading anyway)? Either way, X-mode is a huge bonus to those not used to deal with Subies off-road.

I am yet to see a CVT Subaru on trail (or pretty much any Subaru on trail!) but I recently read that a magazine took a totally stock XV up Engineer Pass at over 12,500ft going up the steeper side, which is very steep. They said they managed but barely. If the XV can do that on stock tires at that elevation without x-mode...the OB should be a safe bet. Still, in the absence of low range, I would trust a turbo, a 6 cylinder, or a diesel more than a regular H4 when it comes to challenging climbs, especially at high elevation.

I got some raised eyebrows from the hard core 4wd brigade when I arrived in Marree to find the Oodnadatta track to have been closed whilst I was en route on it from William Ck yesterday. I hard to stop several times to clear mud out from the guards- there's not much room there-an inch or two of lift would be handy. (My local Pedders shook their heads and said no when I asked them earlier about a gen5 lift).. Bill P
