So driving the wife's 2008 SH Forester today and as were out driving suddenly the engine warning light comes on and at the same time the dynamic stability control/ traction control light comes on, then finally when we start heading for home cruise control disengages and the green cruise light starts flashing.

I read someone's theory about an oil change and resetting ECU figured why not nothing wrong with fresh oil so did one and left battery disconnected for about 30 mins hooked it all back up and sure enough problem still persists. Anyone got any ideas as to what the heck it might be?

something speed-sensing related like the ABS sensors?

you need an OBD2 gauge to diagnose the problem.

For sure, that's how lefty helped me finding the problem of my car with his OBD2
gauge.

The OBDII reader may help, but may not.

When our 2009 SH threw a code, it did not show on either my tablet, or on our regular mechanic's workshop Scangauge (his name is Ross). Same symptoms as yours.

Resetting the ECU BEFORE reading the codes is a no-no, except in an emergency, etc. This procedure clears all recorded codes!

Ross and I figured out that it might have been triggered by having a slightly dodgy fuel sender on one tank (our SH's fuel gauge is not precise like the one in my SG), and running out of fuel the previous day. Apparently, it takes a while for the gauge sender to clear itself after a refill from absolutely bone dry (an unknown number of engine start/stop cycles).

When he re-connected the battery, the car refused to start. The (original) battery had died on the spot, having started the car about six times that morning perfectly.

New battery. No more codes ... :iconwink: .

just FYI the Cruise Control light is part of the active error code system so it disables cruise control when you have an active code and flashes to tell you it is there and assist you in not ignoring it.

From what I can figure out some engineer thought it would make the driver pay more attention to the systems if they couldn't use cruise control.

So it is not related to any particular code just a code in general

^ my Triton does that as well when there is a check engine light i.e. no cruise control
