Hi Members
Has anyone done any research on tyre weight. I am after the lightest A/T tyre too fit too my 2002 Alloys.
Am having no luck finding weights off tyres have seen a couple on tire rack.
Am looking at

Geolanders ATS g012
Bridgestone duellers 697
Achilles desert Hawk A/T
General Grabbers

Will consider others. I have gone for the 2002 alloy wheel as it is 3kgs lighter than my 17 inch wheel or 16 inch steelies. So looking for alight tyre option.

Yes, if not for that particular size. I would expect between 26-31 lb per corner, depending on tire, more if three ply sidewall. That is because I remember some 225-70-16s being in that range.

In 225-65-17, most are in the low 30s lb. The Geolander AT-S is 31 while the Cooper Discoverer AT3 is 34 lb. That compared to 24 for the stock tire.

I now have 39.5 lb TA KO2 tires on Enkei Racing RP03 (18 lb each) and LOVE their performance.

I had a lot of concerns about tire weight, but none of those proved justified.

The 39.5 lb TA KO2 is a FAR BETTER tire than the 31 lb Geolander AT-S ON ROAD in terms of performance (but stiffer ride, obviously, being LT tire run at higher pressures).

That's what I found quite surprising.

I still use the AT-S around town, but cannot wait to wear them out. It is such an inferior tire, totally past its time. It inspires no confidence under hard braking and is outright poor in corners.

Again, I have been very surprised by my inability to notice any adverse effects from the KO2's weight.

I am also thinking the Michelin Lattitude Cross I believe they weigh only 11.5kgs in a 215 65 70 Iweighed my alloy last night it came in at 7.4kg. Total weight per corner 18.9kgs.

I've got Speedlines that come in at 10kg each and BFG AT's that weigh god knows how much.
The car handles much better and is more comfortable on rough gravel.
the weight in the wheels and tyres keep the tread planted and allow the tyre's sidewall to do it's flexxing to maintain contact with the road without transferring vibrations through the suspension and into the cabin.

You have achieved a significant weight saving by using alloys. I assume they are SF GT alloys which are what I use off road. I run Yoko ATS 215-65-16 and have no complaints.
Both my spares are fitted on steel rims and they are significantly heavier than the tyres on the alloys.

Well after countless days working out what I will do and speaking with numerous people this will be my wheel set up

2001 SF GT 16 inch alloy. 7.4kg/16.3lb
Yoko AT/S 215/65/16. 12.7kg/28lb

Total weight per corner 20.1kg / 44.3lb

Compared too my stock 17 alloy with 215/55/17 21.1kg/46.5lb

I gain a AT tyre suitable for most road/ off road conditions and even save a small amount of weight. I keep my +48 offset don't have too be paranoid about damaging a wheel with a higher profile tyre.

Thanks for all the advice and help, and I hope this helps some people out.

Thanks

Good choice, same set up as me with the GT rims. I got over 80,000 km on my first set. I run them at 36 psi on road.
What part of Oz are you in?

Ordered my Michelin Latitudes yesterday for my 16's ( away getting epoxy coated). Should have them all up and going by next week. Will let you know. The Wheels are suby Imprezza wheels from the mid naughties. I will weigh them and post. I hope the sidewalls are tougher than the Synchrones I had on my Prado though. Staked 2 of them before I changed to Coopers.

Hi Greg,
what is the offset of the XV alloys, I never got around to taking a wheel off when I had the loan car. Do Forester alloys with 48 offset fit ?

Hi Havachat
I am in Tasmania. Was tossing up between the Lat cross or the Yoki. Went the Yoki because they are Mud, Snow rated too. I am not a 4x4 person however go too fishing spots in farm paddocks, go up too the snow now and then, tow a trailed into a padlock too drop off garden waste and nearly every road in Tasmania turns into a gravel road at some stage. 😜
I got into a Dutch auction with Kmart and Bob Jane. All saying they would beat any ones price. Started at $229 each and ended up getting them for $180 each fitted and balanced.

Will have them on by next Wednesday. Will try too get a picture up on here. Alloys are being powdercoated satin black.

Good price presume that is a buy 4 pay for 3 offer. The reason why I asked where you were is whether they would be used in snow. Both my daughters are ski instructors at Mt Buller and have a 4wd pass for the village. The Mt Buller village can have some very difficult conditions and the Yokosuka perform exceptionally well.
On road I run them at 36 psi and in sand and mud I air down appropriate to the conditions. On a recent desert trip I had them down to around 16 in some very soft sand and never had any traction issues.
If your car is a manual with the 65 series you will loose some low gearing which generally isn't an issue unless you do some seriously steep climbs.

XV alloys are ( in theory) 48mm offset. Newies are 55 or53 ( I will check when I get them back from being coated.

You're from Tassie, so is Robbks!

I think that's a good setup. It's good to keep the weight down for a heap of reasons (economy, acceleration, handling, etc) but a couple of kgs won't matter. The main thing is to have tyres that suit your purpose & the Geolanders are an excellent all round tyre

OK all done. Big win all round.
Fitted Michelin latitude cross 215/70r16 on Subaru rims ( unknown original donar but 53mm offset and Asahi Tec 16x7jj). Rims were garnet blasted and epoxy coated white.
Weight of stock Yokies and 17 stock rim with 7000km wear 21.7kg.
Weight of Subaru 16 x7jj Asahi Tec and Michelin Latitude cross 20.9kg . So under a 1kg lighter for bigger diameter. Nice gain.
Here is current pic. comparison pics in suspension area. I regard tyres as part of the suspension.
So 1" lift plus 15mm bigger tyres=40mm lift

Just driven it around the estate, on the highway and along tertiary bitumen and dirt roads and well as tested full lock humps and dips. NO scraping ( I have removed the "mudflap " behind the rear tyre and put a temporary flap until I can make some bigger ones more out of the way.
Speedo now only about 2kph optimistic ( was 8kph).
Ride is much smoother on ALL surfaces and it no longer tram tracks on longditudinal ridges on the road. I am running at stock XV recommended pressures. Still have to experiment with that.
Dirt is so much better it is ridiculous. Wet braking seems to be BETTER than stock ( it is currently pouring).
Not noticeably noisier than stock BUT a different sound envelope. So far very happy indeed. I have a win.
