I was wondering.

I´m in need of a new gearbox, I talked to alldrivesubaroo for their 1,59 gearset. but i never hear from them again

So I was thinking, would it be possible to combine a standard Legacy gearbox with the 4,44 final reduction. In that way I would have a shorter first gear, a shorter low range first gear and a longer fifth gear for fuel economy. Than it would be the car it had to be from the start.

I don't exactly understand what you have and what you want…

If you change the final ratio from 3,9:1 / 3,7:1 to 4,44:1 all the gears will be shorter.

If you install a 1,59:1 low gear, only the lows will be shorter

Depends on what Legacy you have but the most common low range is 1,19:1 so you could just upgrade to a Forester gearbox with 4,11:1 final drive and 1,447:1 low range.

at this moment i have the 4,11 final ratio and the 1,447 reduction for low range. the subaru legacy 2.0l has for certain years a 4,11 final ratio and the all 2,0l engines in europe have the 1,447 low range.

so in this way i would get the 4,44 final ratio and still have the 1,447 low range

are you sure about what you have now?

The FSM I have says EUDM 2.0L BE/BH liberties are 1.447 LR and 3.90 diff.

If you go 4.44 with your box, 5th will be quite short (0.825 ~ 3500rpm at 120km/h)

4.11 might be a good compromise -- you'll have the same ratios as a AUDM outback with a better LR (1.447 vs 1.196)

for some versions 2003 to 2006 they have the 0,73 fifth gear and the 1,447 low gear

would this transmission fit with a 4,44 final ratio?

You might find even with the 1.447:1 low range you may have to shave the 4.44 crown wheel the clear the low range selector hub.

Check out Dedman's gearbox build thread, particularly his last post as it shows how much he's shaved to fit the L series' 1.59:1 low range ;)

It's doable, just time and working out what you want to use and what will work out best for you in the long run.

Welcome to the forum ;)

Cheers
