I am trying to work out the gear ratios (1st to 5th + reverse + final drive) for the manual, dual range boxes in the different generations of Australian Subaru Outback.
The internet failed me so far on this one so its time to ask.

I am interested in this as I am trying to work out the optimum starting platform for my second attempt at the ultimate offroading Subaru box.
Currently I believe the SG box is my best bet due to the stronger 1st gear compared to many AWD boxes but my knowledge of the outback box is woefully lacking.

Thanks

I only have the specs for the 2011/2012 models with the 3.6R + MT.

Remind me tomorrow if they are any use to you. I have spent much of today up to my elbows in our sewer . It had a "fur ball" the size of a football ... :puke:.

Just discovered a brochure with gear ratios from around 2000 (??).

Dual air bag model with 15x6JJ alloy wheels.

It has a DR/5MT and 1.196:1 LR

The 3.6R box probably not all that useful as I believe its only a single ratio box.

Just discovered a brochure with gear ratios from around 2000 (??).

This sound very helpful.

5EAT with VTD centre from late model Forester S-Edition or Liberty.

Owners manuals usually list ratios too.

Remind me tomorrow if I forget. If I tried to transcribe the ratios tonight, I would just screw them up ....

I eventually remembered .. :iconwink:.

Diffs 4.11
LR 1.196
1st to 5th:
3.545
2.111
1.448
1.088
0.825

Reverse: 3.416

The auto box has 4.444:1 diffs, and otherwise completely different ratios, of course.

These figures are from the Subaru Oz brochure around 1997-2000. There is no date on either it, or the first generation Forester brochure I have from the same time - i.e. I picked the two brochures up during the same visit to the dealer.

IIRC, the Outback was being sold with a space saver spare at that time, which caused me to fire off an email to Subaru Oz about their potential and real legal liability arising therefrom ... Shortly afterwards, they changed to a full size spare. This recollection causes me to think that the above brochure and figures may well be for the very first OBs sold here, as none of them since has had a space saver spare AFAIK.

Ratbag - I think those numbers are Gen2 outback (pre '99)

Thanks, Duncan. I'd reckon you are right. I can photograph the brochure, but not today ...

Thanks for the ratios RB and thanks for the link duncanm. My concern with the info on the link is that there is no info on pre 2006 models about low range. This does not give me complete confidence the ratios are correct for Australian models. I know that the ratios the link had for SF Foresters are only correct for US models with no low range...

All helpful though :) I am most likely going to end up going for the SG box as I have confirmed that 1st gear is stronger than the sf although I still would really like to use the marginally shorter 1st gear ratio in the SF box

The SG (series II??) box also has stronger synchro - dual synchro rings here and there, IIRC.

You need to check whether the series I box also has these. The stronger the better IMO.

A Gen 4 Outback box dual range is the exact same as SG box but has a slightly shorter 5th. This is what I've got in my Forster. 2800rpm at 100kmhr
Gen 3 Outback box is same size 1st as SF box, has different 5th and 1.19 low range
