Hi all

I am looking to head up to the snow again next weekend. With the current forecast it should be pretty deep 25-50cm so should be able to find some very challenging tracks.

My plan is to head out from Melbourne around 4pm on the Friday night and head towards Licola. I hope to camp in one of the campsites on the Wellington river that night (Tamboritha road).

The Saturday will be heading towards mount wellington and towards the Pinnacles with a few side tracks along the way.

I am planning to camp on the Saturday night in the snow at 1500m, possibly camping in an igloo if I am really keen.

The Sunday will either be heading back the way we came or heading down via billy goat bluff and out through Dargo. The crooked river track may be on the cards as well time permitting however I dont think there will be.

If you want to come you will need a 25mm lift, good ATs, front and rear recovery points, spare fuel and a spade as a minimum. Snow chains might be a good move as well however I have never needed them and do not know how effective they are in deep snow.

Obviously sub zero rated camping gear and clothing and footwear is also a must as well as waterproof super warm gloves or mitts which you will thank me for when we get stuck in snow.

Let me know if your keen

^ not this little black duck ... :poke:

I'm the one who looked at your U tube video from last w/e ... brrrr!

Dedman, will look forward to your grand story and pics, but after today's adventure in the mud, Scooby2 will be safely on the tar with her nose pointed to Brisbane. Stay safe & have fun

Best regards,

Damn man would have loved to make it, camping an igloo sounds awesome:poke:

Trip didnt end up going ahead as I have become rather sick :( Thought sick and snow were a bad combo.

Sorry to hear that, DM.

Hope you get better soon. Wise decision IMO.

Very keen for the next opportunity, since I've come into some time off the next few weeks.

^ me too! On both counts.

Just cannot fit chains with the Yoko A/T-S set on the car, but I take it we wouldn't need to carry them?!?

Might to check that out Pezimm. I remember an outing with the vic subi 4wd club and chains were a legal requirement past Rawson.

I don't know where you'd find out the info on that but it's worth checking out ;)

Dedman, I'd love to go but still need to complete some work on Ruby Scoo. The other issue for me is third term madness is in full swing :(

I haven't been snow camping in ages but it's something I'd like to pursue more of ;)

I hope you're feeling better now too mate!

Cheers

Bennie

I thought carrying chains was only mandatory when visiting one of the resorts? At least on VicRoads website, it points you to the Department of Environment, Land and Water - link here - and when you follow that link, you get on the resorts page...

Confused enough?!?!

Chains must be carried by any vehicle travelling inside a "Declared Hazardous Area" during the snow season. These areas are sign posted as you enter them.

For Victoria, I have found some info on the Vicroads website (as those listed in prior post are not of any help to us)

Sorry I cant organise a link, but if you go to the Vicroads home page, and search "hazardous area authority" it gives the requirements for buses. Scroll down and it gives the Locations, and times in Victoria. June 1 to October 7.

This is the clearest information I can find.

Beigewagon.
