On my short ride home steam starts billowing out the front of the car. I quickly pulled over and there is coolant all over the front of the engine, none on the rear. Oil is clean. I don’t believe I overheated the car. The gauge was normal at all times and it had only been driven about 3 miles at that point. Took about half gallon to refill the overflow and radiator. I drove home slowly the last mile. But it is steaming again and down the same amount of fluid when I pulled into my driveway. Quick visual check showed nothing at first. Steam was coming up both sides of the engine and there is a puddle under car.

Now an hour later it is still slowly dripping from the drivers side front. Near the thermostat/water pump area. It will drip with the radiator cap off then it will stop with it back on. I suspect and hope it is just the water pump seal gone bad. I’m going to let it sit until morning and take a better look at it in the morning. What do you think let go? Can a water pump just blow suddenly? I need to look at what other coolant lines are in that area?

bad / jammed thermostat; split in the bottom radiator hose; blown thermostat gasket - a combination of events.

Sounds like your water pump siezed... that happened to me in an old honda, and it turned out the pressure was just building from temperature... i would get the pump checked asap

 Hope everything is OK. If your oil looks good, hopefully it's just hose, thermostat, or water pump.

Well this actually happened when my radiator cracked on my old 96' Escort, I just drove without coolant for 2 weeks until I got it replaced. Funny enough that little under powered POS never overheated

It is on the 04 XT.
Just picked up a fresh radiator, antifreeze, conditioner, thermostat and gasket. I love Subaru Bucks. I would up only paying $19 bucks out of pocket. Now if it would just stop raining.

You'll never hear an Aussie say that! Unless you're from Queensland...

How'd you score all that for $19?! Still under warranty? Gotta be happy with that (but not the inconvience).

Cheers

Bennie

My local Subie dealer had never heard of the "conditioner" when I picked up some new coolant recently - maybe its premixed down-under.
