I have a 2000 outback 4cyl.

When I go to look up parts I get a few options.

1. Base -- H4 2.5L 2485cc type EJ251 - MFI GAS SOHC

2. Base -- H4 2.5L vin 6 2458cc type EJ252 - MFI GAS SOHC

3. Limited -- H4 2.5 2458cc type EJ251 - MFI GAS SOHC

4. Limited -- H4 2.5L vin 6 2458cc type EJ252 - MFI GAS SOHC

I don't know what option to choose.

My vin is:

VIN:

4S3BH6757Y7668681

Thanks for any help.

Gidday mate, and a warm :welcome: to the ORS forum.

One of your 3 or 4 compliance plates will have the full engine type on it. At least, they do in Oz ...

2000 would be EJ251, wouldn't it? My 2002 MY03 Forester X (base model) has the EJ251 at any rate.

Do you know what model year your Outback is?

Well that's 2 different answers so far. Haha.

And @ratbag. what is a compliance plate?

Compliance plates are a little alloy plate or sticker with the VIN and some other data stamped on it. They are usually attached to the firewall. US cars might not have them. My 2012 OB here in Oz has it attached to the passenger side door pillar. Call or email Subaru and they will tell you which motor you have via VIN. The guys on subaruoutback.org are very helpful also.

usdm subarus aren't Japanese export (think they're assembled in canada and mexico if i remember right) so the plate might be in a different place, or not at all. Japanese made ones have a bright blue plate with the info on them.

What do you need to know about the engine? they are pretty much the same engine, same filters and oil grades etc. Just don't mix and match pistons 251 and 252 had different short block setups.

So yours is a 2000 build year subaru of indiana made automatic right? the ej251 was used in the autos, and manuals had the 252 from 00/01 acording to NASIOC.com, probably good idea to ask over therethose guys would have better usdm info.

Sorry, I've had a lot on the last few days.

A Compliance Plate is an aluminium plate rivetted onto the body frame. It effectively identifies the vehicle, and certifies that it complies with the applicable local laws ... Always assuming that there are local laws that have to be complied with ... :poke:

I think the only plant in NA is located in Lafayette, Indiana... But I think it only produces the Legacy/Outback range, with the rest shipping across from Japan.

Maybe pezimm, I was going off my vin code book, book could be wrong its been known to be
