Long story short. Ive got a 91 l series automatic and just removed the transmission and now I need to remove (as told by a mechanic) whatever the thing is on the back of the front diff that is held on by 3 bolts. Ive undone the bolts but it only moves out a few mm before getting stuck also part of a seal around it poped out and snapped so now I definately have to take it off.

Any help would be greatly appriciated! Thanks

More info is required have you got any photos?

Also there are several service mmanuals available online that have exploded diagrams. You may also want to try opposedforces.com. it is a parts website but you will be able to Id the part and then someone may nbe able to help you

Pics will be up In a few hours. I've got a gregorys service and repair manual but I cannot find anything referring to my problem.

Here's a picture of my problem. The part with the 3 bolt holes

Raynman,

I don't think I can be much help. I don't have a service manual so don’t know what is on the other side of the casing.

If it comes out a few mm I would expect it to come out all the way - I am sure it will be precision machined. Is it coming out evenly for the few mm? Have you tried a couple of opposed flat leavers to try and get it out - bike tyre leavers are good for this they are small and plastic so you will bend them before you break the aluminium parts.

Hopefully some one will be along that has done this job.

Yeah im I think your eight about that. I assumed that since the selector came out of it that it was the trans but im now thinking otherwise.

Yea you've only taken off the rear section of the gearbox with the center diff. You need to drop the cv joints and disconect the bell housing from the rear of the engine to remove the transmission.

Sorry man haven't been on here since you replied. Do to laziness its still at the same stage have tried to source the gasket for between the diff and trans but havent had any luck.

Raynman, jump on the AUSubaru Forum and look up a Member by the name of "FROG" he works at the Griffith (NSW) Subaru Dealership and is good at getting parts and he can also find - get you the info you need to finish the job.

So I bit the bullet and took the car to the mechanics which I should've done from the start and I just have a question about how much fluid the transmission will take if it had been 100% emptied? a workshop manual says around 7 litres but the mechanic told me that he put in 15 liters and wouldn't listen to me. yhe reason I want to know is because the transmission now slips really really bad and I think it may be due to having too much fluid?

Most likely that is how much fluid he used to flush & fill the transmission, but you should check the level on the dipstick. Read the user manual to find where it is, I think it needs to be done with engine running but not sure.

Yeah I thought he may have meant that was how much he used to flush it, but it's way up on the dipstick. he's still got the car so I can't do anything really about it yet. Hopefully he sorts it out. also I don't have the owners manual only a gregorys and cannot finf the fluid levels anywhere in it:-/

if anyone's interested she's all up and running! ended up having to get a new trans but oh well. Now to find somewhere to test it out:-)
