If you've read my other recent post, you'd know I'm switching out my STI suspension from my 1999 GT forester, for some stock struts and springs..

What is the value of a decent set from something around 1999?

I've got someone who is willing to swap his stock suspension for my current setup, with out any cash my way, but I have to drive 2 hours to Melbourne, which is where he'll help me remove and install.. So, good deal?

don;t do it,

STi gear is worth about $300-$400, complete depending on km's
For around $800-900 you can get a brand new set of KYB's and HD springs (Pedders or kings)
Putting you only about 400-600 out of pocket.

I would enquire as to the condition of the other bloke's gear - how many kilometres, any leaks or damage, etc first.

You can buy a complete set of Pedders adjustable coilovers for your car for RRP $1,681 (fitting and alignment will be extra ... ).

You would need to think about how long you plan to keep the car though. If your car is in excellent condition, and you plan to keep it for a fair while, these might be worth the investment. Certainly worth considering.

Thankyou!

I think it's either 04 or 06 STI Pink Suspension from a hatch I believe..

So, how much would just a stock set of suspension be worth? I'm not in the right financial situation to afford that kindof combo.

I wouldn't pay more than $50-$100 for original 99 gear,
it's old and flogged out by now.

if it fits your GT it's MY04 STi or earlier. 05+ STi had different front hub mounting

you'd pay the same $400 or so for good, low KM standard height KYB's and kings

My forester is pretty straight, paint is good, good history, but yeah, definitely not in a position to spend that kind of money. :/

The idea is to buy with what I sell the STI suspension for.

anything with more than 100,000km or so on it isn;t worth buying.
STi or Bilstein Inverted Monotube design happily lasts a lot longer.

So.. I'll either swap for something with KYBs and kings, or sell my suspension, then buy a new set.

The problem for my is I can't reallyyy afford to buy a $400 setup, and wait for my STI stuff to sell.. So that's why I'm considering just going for something a little cheaper.. Eg, stock.

^ I completely agree with your assessment. Every dollar spent on any car is an expense, not an investment (we're not talking about 275LM Ferraris here ... ).

Never make the mistake of spending money you do not have on a car. There are far more important things in life, no matter how much one loves cars and driving ...

I'm not familiar with STi suspension - couldn't you just swap out the springs (or are they coilovers) or add lift blocks? Keep the good bits if you can!

That's an idea Kevin..

Any one know if this is possible?

Confirmed that it is a full set of stock STI Pink struts and springs from an MY04 Impreza hatch/wagon..

I could just switch out the springs? or will the struts affect the height also?

Never skimp on the things that keep your car (a 1500kg deadly missile) in contact with the road and in control
tyres/ Suspension/ brakes

yours and the lives of others depend on it.

STi struts are much shorter than even stock WRX stuff

^ I couldn't agree more, Rob.

However, I was talking about discretionary spending, not essential maintenance and repairs necessary to keep one's car absolutely roadworthy and as safe as possible.

I wasn't going for the stock suspension to 'skimp', just lots of people seem to run at least stock struts so I figured go with a cheaper, but obviously reliable option for the time being. I certainly would go for any el-cheapo or leaky setups..

^ And that's not how you came across to me, SF.

If the SG front and rear struts will fit your car, one option might be for me to upgrade to the fully adjustable Pedders coilovers, and flog my near new heavy duty, variable rate Pedders rear units to you, and throw in a perfectly good pair of standard OEM SG front struts, for around 75% of the cost of the Pedders alone. These have only been in my SG for a few thousand kilometres, and cost $337 each new.

I can afford the Pedders coilovers, if they suit my needs (i.e. at least 1" lift at the rear, with adjustable rate shocks). However, I need to take advice from people here who know a lot more about this than I do (almost everyone ... :iconwink: ), and check with Pedders about the detailed specs for their conversion kit.

Wouldn't work..

Struts appear shorter. :(

But if lift blocks were added would bring back to near stock height by the looks of it. Note the 2nd pic shows a self-leveling strut.

Well, from what I can see from a quick search, it seems that SG front and rear struts will fit my SF5, as long as the springs and tops hats match.

"If you use SG springs you need SG tophats. If you used SF springs you would need SF tophats." -LedJ @ https://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f75/suspension-sg-sf-does-fit-244930/

I understand that this is due to the spring design, and not necessarily fitment related.

If you do find that the adjustable Pedders coilovers do suit your needs, I would strongly consider your offer.

^ Watch this space!

I'll try to remember to give Pedders a call in the morning.
