Hi Guys,

I have noticed some issues with the second gear auto shift on my outback and wanted to know if anyone else has had the same problem and found the issue/solution before I go pulling it to bits. I'm a mechanic with automatic training so no probs there, but wondered if anyone has spoken with subaru about this and come up with any answers at all?
The problem is that the shifts flare heading up through the gears at half throttle (ish) and coming down second will clunk fairly noticeably when you drop through the rev range.. I have already done a flush and change of the oil and replaced with a full synthetic before anyone suggests..
All information appreciated and welcomed, thanks guys 👍

Factory tune for the auto's is rubbish. Get a Throttle Happy Tuning Solutions tune. Gain 20% power, 15% more economy and a better all round vehicle. Done it to every Subaru I own. Made my Forester GT shift much more responsive, smoother and faster. It doesn't hunt for gears now and responds quickly for a old 4 speed. It has also varied the torque split of the transfer creating a much more equal delivery to all 4 wheels.

Stilson and Beej have used a TH tune and had good results. Stilsons is a 07 manual XS 2.5 so same engine as you..

Unlikely that the bands are damaged or worn in such a modern car, unless its has the guts thrashed out of it. Did the new oil make any difference to the issues? Has it always done it or just started? Do you tow much? Aftermarket tranny cooler?
I'd begin by using a scan tool to see what its doing when so called issues arise.
