Familiar Forester, New Face - 03 Forester X

Hi All,

As some of you may know, recently I picked up Andrew's 03 Forester X that he was selling. I did say that if I made any changes, I'd post an update, so that's what I'm going to do. It's only a very minor aesthetic change, but worth noting anyhow.

Here is what the car looked like once it came into my possession.

There was something about the look of the car I wasn't 100% on and I think I narrowed it down to the wheels. For such a nice looking car, the black steels just looked a little... cheap. No offence to Andrew and each to their own, but I think there was a bit too much black down there.

I used some contacts to find a local Subaru enthusiast and managed to pick up a set of alloys off a 99 Impreza and once fitted, it looks like an entirely different vehicle.

So, that's the only update so far.

Well, one other thing really. Andrew knows my history of bad luck with vehicles, everything I touch seems to just fall apart in my hands. Only a week after getting the vehicle, it threw a check engine light at me and my heart sank.

I haven't told Andrew this yet, as I didn't want to concern him before finding out what it is, and I had the code pulled just this afternoon using another connection, and there were two. The first was a low battery warning code for the ignition key (which is a easy fix, just change the battery!) and the other is "51 - ABS RELAY VALVE FAULT".

That one sounded a bit more serious, but after some research it looks like there are two relays inside the ABS Control Module, and one could have a bad connection, or some water in the main plug, or just a faulty relay. The options are to repair/clean, or get a new main ABS pump and from what I can see online, they only seem to go for $100-$150 for a used unit, so that's not too bad.

I had the codes cleared, and will see if anything re-appears.

That's all for now, if any more updates occur, I'll pop them in here too.

Cheers :)

I'd try cleaning the connections going to the abs pump and module... there could be dirt, water or mud in there. Very commom on the mining vehicles I deal with at work.
Those new wheels look great by the way!

Yes, the wheels do look good. Thanks for the update!

Gidday SC

The wheels make a big difference IMO. Very nice.

Congrats on a (hopefully) good buy .

Sweet wheels, are they the same offset as the steels? They really improve the look.

I know when I bought and fitted Impreza alloys to my Foz I had an unpleasant shock when I realised I could no longer fit chains due to the lesser offset of the Imp wheels (chains are often 'required' for skifield access in winter).

Cheers guys. As for the offset, it does rub slightly it seems, only at absolute 100% full lock. The 99 impreza is +48 and the Forester is +55.

May change them in the future, even to the stock XS alloys, but they look nice for now.

Just moved from Coffs Harbour to Canberra, with the Forester fully loaded to the roof inside, managed 8.4 L/100 on 98 ron.

Forester stock is +48 as well. I have +50 and I reckon with a +55 you'd be rubbing against the spring perch.

That was a good run to Canberra!

+53 7" WRX wheels with 215/65R16 roadies fit my foz with no rubbing but it's close. Can't fit chains like I can with my 215/65R16 Bridgestone Dueler 697 AT on +48 forester steels.

Mate I'm sorry to hear about the check engine light coming on! I hope that's the only drama you have with the car! Hope it serves you well just like it did for me. Ps what did you do with the steelies off the car?

I thought I read somewhere that the 03 foresters were +55 stock? I may be misinformed, though.

I haven't thought about fitting snow chains, but we will be visiting the snowy mountains here next year, will have to investigate that as I've never had to do it before. Hopefully the Geolanders bite the snow pretty well on their own.

Hey mate, yeah, you know my history with vehicles and my heart sank when I saw it! Luckily it's not anything major or vital. I'll just have to keep an eye on it.

As for the steelies, they're sitting in the shed in Boambee/Coffs. Didn't have time to Gumtree them before moving as I was working most days. If you've got any more info on them, or you (or someone you know) would like to purchase them, I'm happy for them to go cheaply.

I know that horrible sinking feeling, SC :puke:.

I am getting a knock-off OBDII Bluetooth scanner for our cars. Will use it with Torque Pro, as suggested by Kevin. Will install Torque Pro on both my phone and tablet.

As I said to Ross, our mechanic of some 15 years, it isn't a substitute for a proper workshop scanner, anymore than a shifting spanner is a substitute for a proper workshop and mechanic. However, with modern cars, the on-board scanner is just as essential as the shifting spanner. He agreed.

I will post a review of both when I get the scanner from wherever it is coming from!

The scanner is costing $11.83 with 'expedited' postage. Torque Pro costs $4.95 for Android. Not sure whether that is $4.95 per device, or for both ... Hardly the end of the earth if it's each.

I've got a mate interested in a set of wheels like that for the bush pm me with $$ thanks. I was a bit worried when I was reading your post about something had gone wrong! Lucky only something minor
