I have a stock '97 Legacy Outback and though I consider myself well versed in this cars workings, this one has me completely stumped, whenever I have a problem that i cant fix offhand, I search the forums, and I find a solution, but this has me completely confused...
let me describe the situation.
my starter started doing the dreaded impotent clicking that signals it's in bad shape, so instead of rebuilding it and having it die again a month later, I replaced it with a reman. this may be related, it may not, but the current problem started today, three full days of errands and to and from work after the swap.
(after lots of swearing and experimentation) I found that if I just turn the key, the car acts like the battery is dead or something, the lights are strong, but if I try to start the car (and get nothing) then turn it off and remove my key, the headlights, radio, and A/C will remain on, but the shifter will lock like normal. to get them to turn off, the shifter to unlock, and for that matter, to get the car to even attempt to start, I have to rock the car forward and back as hard as I can, then when it's all the way forward is the only time it will do anything, but the problem only presents itself when I try and start the car, when I stop, and shut it off, it shuts off just like normal. the only time I got it to start today with no fuss whatsoever, is when I was parked facing down a very steep hill, I have no clue what could cause this and figured someone out there would know.
because I have to rock it, it makes me believe it MIGHT be a transmission problem, but I've never hear of something like this, and im not going to go haphazardly poking around the thing full of magic and pixie dust that makes my engine move my wheels. I miss my M/T's.
PLEASE HELP, I WANT TO TRUST MY SUBARU AGAIN!
