Hi all

I am a bit concerned that the oxygen sensor on my forester is buggered (as my old engine was burning stupid amounts of oil which cant have been good for the sensor and the new engine is using 11l/100km fuel which is a bit high) but I am not sure how to tell. I dont have any check engine light on but at the same time I dont get one with the sensor unplugged either which I think is rather strange.

I went to bursons today to see what a replacement sensor was worth and they asked me if it was the front or rear sensor. I was stumped by this question because I was under the impression that my car doesnt have a rear sensor and given that I have had the complete exhaust out more times than I can count over the last few weeks I know for a fact that there is only one sensor on the system. The guy behind the counter told me this was not possible and talked to me like I was a bit thick. All the images online show a second sensor further down the exhaust but they are all us models.

So my question, is there meant to be a second sensor that has somehow been removed from my car or is the bloke at bursons full of ****?

Also if anyone with an SF feels like disconnecting there O2 sensor and letting me know if they get a check engine light that would be great as I really feel that I should.

It won't bring on the light if you disconnect it. Yea a faulty sensor can cause this. Genuine is around $600 which is ridiculous! You can get one from cooldrive for around $200 that is direct fit. Don't buy a generic one from repco or somewhere as they don't work.
I plugged the scan tool in feom work and monitored my foz's data.. when it warmed up it should of dropped down in voltage so the ecu doesn't keep pouring fuel in (choke on) but it didnt drop, the heating element was stuck on giving false readings and causingbad economy and peeformance.
both my engines had bad burning oil like yours (2l per 400km was before the motor died).

Hope this helps.

Oh yes they are full of ****. Only SF turbos had 2 oxygen sensors. SG's do aswell. Some later models had 2 or 4 depending.
the old Outbacks and libs (2003 and earlier) have one o2 sensor.

Thanks mate. Good info there. Very strange that the ecu does not spit a fault with it unplugged. $200 for a sensor is still bloody steep, do you know what is wrong with the generic ones?

I wish I could find a diagram of the exhaust with only one sensor just to prove this guy wrong but all the ones on the net are us models with 2

Find an EJ22 diagram. It'll be very similar.
The computers we run with the SF 2.0l is one of the most basic Subaru have produced. It doesn't even have a cam sensor! Just the basics to run a efi engine.

I might be able to get it a little cheaper... trade price.

In 2013 mine was $153.81 plus shipping - $22.00 via USPS Priority Mail

Can confirm only one on a SF na.

Recently had to lift my bonnet to prove the SF na has the ECU bolted to the engine, its inside the cabin on the SF GT

Thanks for the replies. Ill look in to these places and see what I can find.
The parents are out Macedon way but im in the east. Hopefully I will be able to hook up to the ecu at some point and check the new sensor is working after I find one.

Definitely only one sensor. I think it's just a denso sensor, which you can usually get cheaper by finding the same part no. for a Toyota since they own denso
