^ Nice Impreza, FF ....

I have fond memories of my '93 Impreza, even though it was gutless as hell (EJ-18 ... ), had all the wrong gearing, and the ECU tune left a great deal to be desired! I had it for nearly 18 years.

Got burned off by every shopping pram and 5 ton truck around the city, but there was very little that could come close to it on winding country roads ... The Lancefield road, for example ... :lildevil:. Lovely touring car.

just moved back to Brissy from Kyneton, so i know the lancefield road well.
mine is an EJ18 also damn she can rev but thats about all haha i love driving her she is awesome.

I seem to recall that Subaru at least fixed the ECU tune with the model after mine. IIRC, they also put the EJ-20 into it. That just left the really crappy choice of gear ratios!

1st wasn't quite low enough. 2nd and 3rd were about right. 4th was a bit too low. 5th was a lot too low. Even with 230+K kms under my foot, I still kept trying to shift it into "top" from 5th.

IMHO, both the Forester and the Impreza should have been offered with the 2.2L donk from day one, with the 2.5L as an option. Neither of them were light cars, and were seriously underpowered and with a seriously inappropriate torque curve for the gearing and weight. However, one cannot re-write history with 20:20 hindsight ... :iconwink: :poke:.

Really liked my Impreza, for all that. Wouldn't have kept it for nearly 18 years if I had hated it ... :iconwink: .

I know someone who bought the EJ-16 version - just front wheel drive too and 66kW from memory. I wonder how well it went? The EJ-18 had 76kW I think.

At the time another good friend had a 2.2 Liberty fwd manual that really impressed as an all round good car. She did 546,000km in it before trading it in on another Liberty (which was written off by a wayward 4WD at 300,000km) and is now the owner of a 2010 Impreza. At the time I had a 93kW EFI Magna manual which felt so much more powerful than her 100kW Liberty. That's what good low down torque does to confuse. That Liberty had fairly low gearing but to me needed it as it didn't seem to have much bottom end torque. I loved the revability of the engine, the steering and great suspension over poor roads that the Liberty had though. And its neat Japanese build quality.

Both engines were jdm options. export market was streamlined abit for economic reasons i would bet.
