as requested by SKT this is my setup.

first i bent up a bit a aluminium bar and used velcro to hold it down on the dash

then i stuck some more velcro on the back of the 10.4" touchscreen and played around with it untill it was the right angle.

everything plugs into ciggy sockets and i used a VGA cable from the screen to the lappy. i also got one of those FM transmitters so i could play music off the lappy to the radio so if i'm using Copilot (voice guided satnav) it will pause the music to give directions. at the moment the lappy just sits behind the passenger seat in the foot well but i plan (some day........) on making some kind of sling to hang on the passenger seat.
for offroading i use oziexplorer https://www.oziexplorer.com/ and various digital maps and my gps is a bluetooth gps which sits above the slideshade of the sunroof.

now as you can see my beutiful reflection:puke:is because the screen is highly reflective which i overcome by using window socks on the back windows, shades on cargo windows and a small home made trim around the screen which i dont have pics of.
 
Thats a nice set up you have there eden. :)

I really must pull my finger out & get a set up like that in mine too.

Beauty....

I'm looking for a mini laptop.... 7" or less that'll sit in the hinged pocket on the dash. Solid state HD with card reader should be ample storage with cards for different setups.....

At the moment a sweet HP PDA on a RAM Mount with BT GPS reciever is doing the work and doing pretty well. I am lacking local maps to get right off road but I've had it mounted for off road testing and its solid as a rock.

My only gripe is it does sit a little high on the dash and being the 'aggresive' driver that I am offroad I like to have as much vision as possible. If I set it for landscape this minimises the vision loss.

In dash touch screen to Carputer running solid state HDs would certainly be the go.....
 
I've been thinking about this for a while, as I work as an IT engineer in the digital signage industry; which means I work a heck of a lot with very small embedded PCs.

After all my testing and wondering, I think I'm just going to settle on an eepc, with a touchscreen, running Linux (to avoid Windows crashes and lag). I'm sure I can get oziexplorer running in Linux well enough. Just need to sought out a practicle mount that gives me the best viewing angle whilst being in reach.

Well I can probably get you soem very stable and reliable small form factor PCs if you want, at wholesale price ;)
Check out the PCs at www.advantech.net.au
These things are designed to run 24/7, in hot and dusty conditions and I'm pretty sure some of them are water resistant. Actually, there's lots of embedded PCs and touchscreens made in Taiwan that are quite affordable that are durable and water resistant.

Some nice setups there! I run an HP PDA for street nav stuff but I have a word of caution.:exclaim: I got lazy one afternoon and decided to leave the thing in the hinged dash console. When I came back, the PDA refused to restart saying it had a "critical temperature shutdown". After blowing the aircon on it for about 20 mins it started again and has run fine since, but if anyone's planning on storing electronic gizmos in there - beware - they just might be a molten puddle of plastic when you come back.

I've got an eee running Linux, so I'd be VERY interested in finding out how to run Oziexplorer on it.
 
What version of linux you running?
Should be a case of simply emulating the Ozi explorer using Wine (linux windows emulator).
 
Um, the one that came with it? :shrug:Sorry, I'm not real sure about that. I haven't done a whole lot with the eee as I'm completly new to Linux and haven't figured out how to add much in the way of software. Haven't figured out those command line thingys:furious:still, it works just great for the things it does:p
