Battery Impact Gun

The new Milwaukee fuel 1/2'' impact driver is a lot more powerful than even most air tools. Something like 900nm of torque. And yes they should get hub nuts off quite easily.

Gidday Fazed

18V & 36V power tools are seriously powerful.

Check the price they want for the batteries, because I noticed that the price they are quoting is without a battery at all!

Cool, that link was just for an example of what I'm after. Just didn't want to get something that didn't do the job. Getting to broken to keep using breaker bars.

Hi,

We have one of these at work https://www.blackwoods.com.au/search/cordless-impact-wrench-li-ion-18v-makita/302025943?c=Product.

I borrowed it to do the clutch on my car about a month a ago. It was good for speeding up the removal of bolts but didn't have the guts to break all the bolts free.

It did the wheel nuts (just) and the lower ball joint retaining bolts but was not up to the gearbox - engine bolts. Where it was usefull is you only had to just crack the bolts with a breaker bar and it would take care of the rest.

Hardly surprising that Makita did not do anymore than it did. Milwaukee is an outstanding brand- certainly ahead of Makita but it is also not cheap. I am not normally a Ryobi fan but their gun is quite good for what it is. I have a DeWalt only because I used to work for them, but if I was starting from scratch I'd give the Ryobi, with lithium batteries- a good hard look. Will it undo a hub nut? I don't know. But I have a 600mm long breaker bar for when things get really tight and I rarely ever need that.

Milwaukee FUEL product line are BEAST, but i was searching and it seems hard to find the FUEL line in AUS?

Have experience with a Makita impact that has ~550NM of torque loosening. Have met very few nuts/ bolts it wont undo.

IMO they are better than air tools because of the ease of use without having to set up a compressor etc. And once you have a battery set you can add the other tools for relatively little cost.

If i had the money and the need Id grab a Milwaukee FUEL impact. However I haven't really come up against much my breaker bar and some muscle can't budge.

Just bought the Milwaukee Fuel one. Something like 900Nm of torque. Should out last me.

I have a 18v makita one. Around 550nm of torque. I find it does the job 99% of the time. When it doesn't I use a breaker bar with 2m pole..

For the price (skin only) I was very happy. The only issue is its large and can't always fit into tight places.

Ive had it snap 2 wheel studs when trying to undo nuts before. (Not on Subaru's).

After replacing my cv shafts for the 2nd time this week, the Milwaukee impact gun is worth its weight in gold.

I have a Ryobi one, Julia Gillard has more balls than it. Its pretty good at quick nut/bolt removal after they're cracked loose already. Doesnt even do wheel nuts! Maybe i have a dud?

Milwaukee and Makita are the way to go.

Do you have the big one or the little one?

Its a good thing my mind isnt in the gutter or some of these comments would be hilarious!:rolleyessarcastic:

Fazed, is the gun you got the same as that link?

I would love one but funds are too tight so will have to stick with the old fashioned 600mm breaker bar & pipe if needed :iconwink:

There are a number of guys in my old car club who have them who swear by them. They are used at race meetings and at home. I don't even know if the Ryobi does come in 2 sizes- other brands do. But if yours is the gun I am thinking of, it should be able to do a good job. Since you bought it at Bunnings, take it back and say it is not doing a good job.

Anyone try a Bosch? I have most everything of theirs and love them, but the 3/8 or 1/2 impactor is the only thing I dont have.

This is the one I got. Being on special and so close to tax time was an offer I couldn't refuse.

That's a winner! 5yr warranty on the driver is pretty good :monkeydance:

In particular, "Nut Busting Torque: 1,492Nm" = awesome!! :lildevil:

Don't bother with a 3/8, that's just for a home handyman tinkering in the shed lol :iconwink:

Just be very wary of claimed torque outputs. There are more ways of measuring - or reporting, torque than there are ways to walk down the beach. Ryobi used to make an electric blower vac rated at 1400w, and it was not a bad machine for the money compared to it's rivals. But, it was only 1400w. So Ryobi brought out a 2200w or 2400w machine, which actually did not blow as hard as the 1400w machine. Advertised torque can be substantially higher than actual torque, but with brands like Milwaukee (which is part of Ryobi) you can't go too far wrong. And forget 3/8D.
