Hi all,
The door cards in my L series are severely suffering from a combination of hard life, UV exposure and ingrained dirt.

The stuff that's peeling appears to be a thin vinyl layer on top of 5mm of low density foam, on top of some pretty solid plastic mould.

My thought is to remove ALL off the foam/vinyl from the plastic moulding and replace it with marine carpet or something similarly hard-wearing, but that won't be as harsh on my elbow.

Thoughts, experiences, suggestions?

Should be doable, just be careful the foam isn't holding down the inner windows seal. Contact adhesive is your friend, just follow the directions!

Maybe get some in good condition from a wrecker?

While a great fan of contact adhesive, I have found that it doesn't work very well in cars - just too hot for it, and it creeps. Liquid nails would probably work better. I haven't tried the latter, but it just occurred to me.

You could also try Selleys Multigrip. It sticks like baby poo to a nappy, and I have even repaired two holes in the business end of my automatic pool cleaner with it!

I generally give it 72 hours to harden up properly ...

The problem with liquid nails would be getting even coverage so it doesn't leave lumps/lines of glue. Actually it would probably work well with a carpet, not so much fabrics. I've used a spray adhesive for marine carpet before, fine for flat stuff but it doesn't hold well enough to wrap it around edges.

When I pulled off the fabric from my door panel inserts they were glued with a spray on adhesive from factory, and that's what I used. If you want it padded then get some wadding from somewhere like spot light. It is possible to over do the glue on the padding and saturating it so it gets glued down compressed, giving an uneven surface finish (happened to me). Less should be best with a good glue.

You can also get padded faux suede with an adhesive backing on ebay. Found some forum posts of people that have used it with good results. It should be hard wearing and still nice and soft.

This is the adhesive I used.

Go nuts and have a go fixing what you have, upholstery is fun!

I hear Venom is starting a new door card repair business, he did a great job on his old worn front doors before he got fancy JDM cards :rotfl:
