Need obd sorted out

hey everyone

Ok i have a 96-98 subaru outback ej25 dohc auto .

I have tried a elm327 scanner and it didnt work .

So all i need is a definate answer on what this car is no other forums have a straight answer

Obd or obd 2 or only ssm ?? And how can i go about getting the right scanner for myself

In any case '95-'98/9 Subaru it can be a crap shoot on what you have.

'89-'98 SSMI = 9 pin EFI diagnostic port
'96-'98 SSMI = 16 pin OBDII connector with pins in location 12 and 13
'95-'99 OBDII = 16 pin OBDII connector which may or may not have pins 12 and 13, and only communicate when using supported PIDs. "

So as a start is it 9 pin?
