Good idea, the other thread had become quite heavy with images and videos!

So, any conclusions as to how different systems performed? Did the X-mode make any sort of difference anywhere? It should have not, at least on the basis of what I saw. Did the Fories with wheel braking ability clearly do better than earlier models over the ruts? What was the deepest mud/water combo a Forie went through? Did you try any more significant rocky sections as the one you posted earlier from the same park? That was very interesting, but this "best of" video features only scattered and minor rocks.

Great effort to pull off that! Congrats again.

Thanks! I was trying to keep the video as close to 5 minutes as possible.

I wanted to keep this trip mild because most everyone in the group was new to off-roading. I'm pretty sure a couple in the group could have tackled the harder stuff, but the newer Fozz's would have sustained some body damage. I scraped up my rocker pretty badly going up or down the big hill, not sure when, but it's just black plastic.

The X-mode worked great on the large downhill into the park at 1:50. He's using the speed control the entire way down. The SJ's performed just as good as my SH did. They were scraping bumpers in a couple sections because of their lower approach angle compared to mine.

We didn't have a lot of mud on the trails to truly comparison test. It was all dried up by the time we got there. The mud that was available was too deep and too close to a body of water. Some of us thought it was too risky to attempt.

The SG Forester outclimbed the SF on the big hill. The SG was an automatic on Street tires, the SF was a manual with mud-terrains. About 3/4 of the way up the engine stalled out on him every time. He was equipped with front/rear limited slip and a locked center. A low range would have definitely helped him there.

One of the SJ's was a manual. His clutch didn't like him at all that day. In conclusion, US market automatic/CVT is better than manual. We're going to have to scrutinize X-Mode our next trip this summer.

Next trip, I'm just going to have to get out and take some close-up videos of us negotiating the rocks. The Gopro doesn't do it any justice.

Here's the big hill, up and down:

The SF Forester had front & rear LSDs & a locking centre diff??? More details please :poke:

Very impressive :monkeydance:

The owner of the SF works at a Subaru performance shop. He said he swapped the differentials with STi or WRX units, whichever ones are limited slip, by removing the ring gear from the diff and bolting it onto the limited slip units. The center differential was taken apart and locked. He said his next step was to put in a WRX engine for more power.

This is him attempting the same big hill I went up:

He made it look a lot easier than the time we took an SH down there:

I think the best thing he could do is a dual range with either 1.447:1 or 1.6:1 LR. That will be way more effective than any engine he could put in. The LSDs & locked centre will help with grip, but he's very limited with a SR box.

That SG was very impressive though...

I wish they had offered the dual range in the Foresters here. We'd probably see many more off-road equipped ones.
