I had a Drift magnetic oil filter, D1-MF495, but couldnt get another one at SCA, Autobarn or Repco, so just went with a Ryco. Googling it was interesting, lots of people have had problems with them:

The rubber seal leaking (minor but annoying) but much more worryingly, an engine knock on startup. Mine did both! Apparently the engine knock is something to do with it building up oil pressure. It will be interesting to see if I get the knock again.

Other than that they seem to do a good job at filtering. From what I read, most filters do a good job of filtering down to 20 microns but metal particles from 5-20 microns also damage the engine. Filters cant be designed to filter these out as the ultra fine filter surface would reduce oil pressure damaging the engine. The magnet in the filter attracts these, so you get the best of both worlds.

Another thing I like about the Drift, apart from the metallic blue finish lol, is it has a very handy nut on the bottom to untighten with

But the engine knock & that thread really makes me hesitant about using the Drift again

So what do others use? What should I be using? Ryco, genuine, etc...

Interesting filter you have described, not come across them before.. Like you say it will be interesting to see if you notice a difference.

Having not been to fussy about oil filter type, someone explained a few things about them to me and it got me thinking for a relatively low cost item, I may as well use a genuine one.

I get them from a Subaru specialist parts supplier and they offer two versions, a blue one (slightly cheaper) or a black one, which is meant to be a better quality and a bit more expensive. Both are stamped as made in the USA.

I have only ever used a genuine filter on my Forry & like Barnboy said they're not that expensive.
So in saying that, I think I'll continue using the genuine filter on mine.

Regards
Mr Turbo

I've only used the genuine black Subaru filter mainly because the car has only been serviced at Subaru dealers except for 1 time and then I supplied my own Subaru filter. I'm returning to the same place next Thursday for its big service and will do the same. I've never experienced that knock & if something like that happened I'd be switching straight back. I wouldn't dream of looking at an alternative oil or filter because the engine on my XT uses no oil at 250,000km and feels & sounds like it will last forever.

Does it only knock on the first start after the oil change, or at every start up, and only since the service?

Only sometimes & only at atartup. The last time it did it about a week ago, I turned it off then restarted it & it was gone

Yeah, only noticed it since previous oil/filter change. Havent noticed it since the last one (used Ryco filter this time) but it was intermittent.

Change the filter(same brand) but not the oil and see if it continues. Then if it continues, change brands (say genuine) of filter but not the oil. That way you will determine if it was just adodgy example or a dodgy brand of filter. If it still happnes, it might be the oil or some other issue.

I've long used genuine. Bought a stack of them in a group buy, saved quite a few dollars doing it too.

Too thicker oil or oil pump is dieing.

I was using Penrite HPR10 10W50 but I'm using HPR5 5W40 now

I got a spare engine you can have cheap from a SF :P
hahahoho :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I'll be doing that too. Found these, both with sump plug crush washers:

I'm using the ryco filters, no issues like that at all. Weird maybe a bad filter

How does $10 each for black ones sound?

This thread makes interesting reading:

Seems quite a few others have had this prob with Drift filters. Shame as apart from the knocking & possible engine damage, it has all the features
