Top vids machine1
That bog hole near the end looked like it was fairly deep too

Mr Turbo

Thanks guys!
I don't think I ever want to go in a boghole that deep again.

Full version of our trip Saturday...

That rocky track looks sweet- and I bet it's far steeper than it looks in real life!

The way out was the worst. I couldn't even tell it was a path until I saw the tire tracks.

I did an edit and zoomed in on the action.

Machine 1,

That is very interesting! When--and if--you have the time, would you mind describing a bit the main challenges you faced and the things you think the car did particularly well vs. those you had trouble with? Did you damage anything on that climb-out that is zoomed? I could not see very well, but it seemed quite rocky.

Also, I am not familiar with Fories. What exactly version of the AWD +- LSrD does it have? Or does it have the wheel-breaking function of the current Forie+Ob+Crosstrek?

Looks like that was a good, fun, rocky, muddy trip!!!

Awesome job climbing the rocks.

Thanks carljwnc! The Forester wanted to show those Jeep guys that it can play too, hahaha.

Middleagesubie, my Forester has the VDC system, which is open diffs with wheel braking. I off road with the VDC off which disables the throttle cut of VDC but still allows the wheel braking.

The main challenges I faced was the fear of bottoming out. That influenced the lines that I chose to take causing me to get stuck on the first section of the muddy trails and having to back up. I took a different line and got through that section with ease.

The car did very well on the steep short climbs. As long as I was steady on the throttle it would climb up all of the hills on the trail.

My fear of bashing in the oil pan because I do not have a metal skid plate also influenced a lot of my lines on the trail. If I had a bit more ground clearance and some under armour I would probably drive directly into those deep ruts.

With my tires (Cooper Discoverer AT3) I could drive over the mud or water holes without fear of getting stuck.

The climb out of the level 3 trail was a combination of wet dirt and rocks. It had rained the day before and everything was slick. I did not damage anything fortunately, the reason I stopped during the climb was because my rocker panel was resting on a boulder. I had my friend put a rock between the boulder and my right rear tire so that I could climb over it but the wet dirt decided to kick me sideways to the left.

My coworker went down that trail a couple of weeks before and was confident that the Forester could make it through. When he went down there everything was still dry. An ATV driver mentioned that its was a lot harder with the wet dirt and rocks.

My skid plate fear was at a level 9 (out of 10) down in that trail, but the Fozzie got me out of there safe. My Forester has earned his spot in the garage.

Thanks, great info! So, the current set up with wheel braking showed up first on the 2009 Forester. Makes sense.

Your welcome! I believe on the the Forester VDC came out with the SH models (2009-2013 US). The new gen has what they call X-Mode now.

Nice, elegant driving...looks like you guys had a good time!

Thank you so much! I always tell everyone I'm a conservative driver. We have a blast every time we go out there. A few hairy moments but I always go back to explore more.

Do you mean you turn the TC off but leave VDC on? TC cuts the engine power when it senses a wheel slipping.

IMO you should make that a priority lol.

Primitive Racing Skidplates are very good & very popular in the states, there's also Skid Plate - RASTA4X4.com

Wouldnt surprise me if Sumo or Subtle come out with a bash plate as well

Oh yeah, a bit of rain can turn an easy track into a nightmare, esp if its clay based.

Its amazing what they can do offroad for a car that handles well onroad. Did he get a hug before being put to bed? :rotfl:

I went and mapped out all the trails from my latest video:

Complete trail map:

Trails are rated from 1 diamond (Green) to 5 diamond (Black).

Sections:

* The West Quarry consists of a bunch of shallow water crossings

* Three wheel junction will cause you to bottom out if you don't crawl through

* I took the wrong line at 7:01 causing me to struggle getting over that rut

* Took a swim in an unexpected bog hole (26:00)
* This section is named the Spider Web and likes to swallow vehicles (29:27)

* A couple of Raptors jumping the Raptor hill

This was a 3 Diamond Trail we went down into...

The X on the map is where the video is focused on:

Enjoy. I will add other videos and sections later.
