I need to get 2 new tyres for my GFs '09 FG G6 Falcon (I know its not a Subie lol). Size 235/50/17. Looking for excellent grip esp in the wet & good tread wear. Any suggestions?

Bridgestone RE002 if available in that size. i run them on both my cars. Or perhaps the RE050 or RE050A. Remember all else being equal, grip comes at the expense of tread wear, but the compromise is always improving.

I'd always take the grippier tyre over the longer lasting tyre, and I'd hope you'd do the same especially in a RWD Falcon.

We do want the best grip we can afford but we realise its a compromise to wear. Dont really like Bridgestone although those RE050 or RE050A do look good.

Anyone tried Yokahama Advan Sport? They look good but have read some reports of poor tyre life.

RRP is $322 so at $149 +$30 freight +$10 fitting the eBay ones are pretty good!

The S Drive also looks good & is recommeneded for XR6 & XR8 Falcons...but (according to the Yoki website) also doesnt come in this size

Or Kumho KU31 (KU36 has poor wear & wet performance according to their website):

Or Toyo Proxes 4:

Dunlop SP Sport Maxx or Goodyear F1 are both great tyres.

Ah, interesting. Why is that? I quite like them. Even though the 002 is a high performance road tyre, it performs well on dirt- no punctures!!!! (Yet)

Had 2 bad experiences with them. They seem to be nice & grippy at first but then go hard which is how they get good tyre wear. So people say they grip well ( 1st impressions last) & wear well, but I've found they have poor grip.

My Geolander ATs had way more grip than my Bridgestone HTs, that shouldnt happen.

Yeah looked at them. Are Dunlop owned by Goodyear now? Dunlop's on the Goodyear website now

Toyo Teo Plus tyres.
Toyo is a well known brand although not one of thwarted biggest. I know someone who is running them on a sti. Lasted about 40, 000km with 1/3 tread left. Wet grip is amazing, dry grip is very good. Very quiet tyre that rides great on the road.
Not too expensive either.
Now with 1/3 tread left the wet weather grip isn't as good but still better than the grip my rubbish Dunlops have in the dry.
They handle frequent AWD burnouts and slides well too so I'd imagine tjeyd be good on a RWD.

Kumho KU31, best $/grip/wear ratio for a daily driver tyre by far. Achilles ATR sport is another option if you can get them at the right price.

Less right foot should make them last longer. I had Bridgestone something or others on my last couple of falcons. I miss my fords :(

I had 3 excellent experiences with them. I replaced the original crap Geolandars with Japanese made RE001 (the best) and did 65,000km, then another set (Australian made - not quite as grippy) and did 60,000km and then a set of Thai made RE002 and did over 70,000km. I used to comment how the grip stayed fantastic right to the end. One complaint would be not quiet enough on coarse chip which is why I'm now on a set of Bridgestone Turanza ER33, also great grip and super quiet. Nothing can really cure an SG Forester coarse chip road noise though.

I agree Guzzla. The RE002's are good for my use, and for a track street tyre the RE070 is pretty good. Yokohama used to make good tyres, and maybe they still do, but my experience, which used to be positive, is now very much negative.

Mate,

I'm a big fan of the Pirelli STRs. I do rotate them every 7500-10000 clicks but talk about grip and in the wet? Unbelievable.

Don't know if they do them in the size your after, but i picked them up for $175.00 each (on special) from one of those Toyota backed TyreRights who threw in the alignment and balance for free.

Put it this way. I would be retiscint to try anything less than these on ANY car I own.

Some interesting thoughts. I think the Kuhmo KU31's are ahead atm but keep the suggestions coming. Pirellis on a Ford...who'd a thunk it! Anythings possible :iconwink:
