Bugger about the key.

You can re-program a new key to the engine immobiliser. Usually a locksmith can re-program it with the info from the key you still have.

Where do you live?

[EDIT]

I had a locksmith clone one of my keys to a chipped key. Cost was $125, IIRC. It does not have remote buttons. Open car with the key using the lock, then it will start the engine. The battery is not replaceable (i.e. good for about 10 years ... ). I also had a standard key cut. It lives in a Keytainer. It will open the car, but will not start it. Cost around $15, IIRC.

thanks for the prompt response mate, so if I buy said key off the Bay then I could take it to my local Locksmith for them to reprogram to the engine code, can they also cut the blank to manual unlock (just being one of those weird side cut keys wasn't sure if all locksmiths can cut them).

I am in WA Perth - Southwest :)

^ OK. Put your location in your user profile. It helps others to help you.

Contact Taza, he's doing an auto electrician apprenticeship in Perth, and will be able to either organise it, or recommend someone.

SWMBO's MY10 also has one of those funny laser cut keys. I haven't asked my local locksmith about getting another one for her car yet, so cannot answer your question.

When I had the spare cut for Roo2, the locksmith told me then that the key blanks with the remote buttons were more expensive. The $125 I paid included the key, programming the chip (cloning it) and cutting the key.

You may well find that your local locksmith can supply the key blank for much the same money as the Fleabay one ... Check first!

No problems I will update my profile, i tend to keep my online profiles pretty vague, privacy reasons and all that :iconwink::iconwink:

Ok yeh I will drop a line to the local locksmith Monday and see what info they can give me before doing an impulse buy from eBay. If no go then I will hit up the contact you mentioned.

thanks for your help!

^ No worries, TM.

Good luck with the key.

Make sure you specify that you are asking for the cost of both the key without buttons, as well as the "genuine" type remote, buttoned key. The two are significantly different in price!

We have both of the remote access keys for both our cars, so it didn't really matter that my travelling spare hasn't got the remote buttons. In your situation, I would get a key with the remote buttons.

NL's thread references contain valuable info about the early model keys. The sites mentioned almost certainly also have info on the later model keys.

BTW, I understand about the privacy stuff ... :).

The "search" button is your friend :poke: :iconwink:

Getting Keys Cut?

Transponder Key Blade Replacement

PigSti has done a lot of research on this so he can have a spare in case anything happens to his original...a very good idea :iconwink:

Yeh I was lucky to have my original spare so no danger initially but knowing my short term memory I will need a spare before too long

yeh should have done a quick search, bit of a fail there. Although in saying that the models in that thread are 6+ years older than mine. Does look promising though so I will chase down a locksmith first thing Monday :)

Profile *vaguely* updated :Bananacomputer:

Lol, mine can be a bit vague sometimes too haha

I love the story of the head of the identity theft department in a major bank who had his own identity stolen...took him 2 yrs to get everything cleared! If it can happen to him.... *scary thoughts*

yeh to be honest as a heavy internet user, and with so many forum and social media registrations out there I am sure someone could gather a whole lot of data from them. I just try to be a little bit more proactive on my security than the next person, that way hopefully the hax0rs take the easier targets, low hanging fruit and all that :rotfl:

Will update this thread with my findings from the locksmith ring-around on Monday might be helpful should anyone with a similar generation Forry else be as forgetful as me with where they left their keys

A fish swimming in the ocean doesnt have to be faster than the shark, just faster than the fish next to it :rotfl:

Ok just to update this thread, Southern Lock And Safe https://www.southernlock.com.au/, can do the non factory Keys (unlocks and starts car but no remote entry buttons) for $128.00

Will probably go down that path for the spare as I would rather keep the $270 extra dollars to get a factory Subaru one in my pocket

They suggested they could cut the blank if I purchased on off Ebay but they can't program them. Although there is also crew on Ebay offering to give you programming instructions for x amount of dollars.

^ That's the sort I have as my travelling spare, TM. It lives in my camera bag.

I will probably get one of them (chipped key) for SWMBO's SH as well.

We do have the original numbered key tags for both cars, so can always have Subaru make new keys for either of them - at an horrendous price (about $350-400 each for OEM keys)!

Better than Audi (around $800) Mercedes (around $1,200), IIRC, but still bloody highway robbery IMNSHO ...

yeh local dealer quoted me $400 for factory key as only option :(

wow yeh the Euro stuff is cray expensive for parts/maintenance in general.

I think the Ebay key blanks and self reprogramming might be a path to pursue if you definitely want original but don't want the big bill but the $128 quick fix should get me by :)

thanks all for your help.l

G'day again TM.

If you believe Subaru, if you get one new key, they (Subaru) need to re-program the immobiliser system and all your existing keys as well as the new one - for a substantial fee, of course.

There are threads on this forum that tell you how to re-program one key to work with your existing immobiliser's current code. It does not appear to be all that difficult, and shouldn't take more than about 15 minutes, all up!

I would find the thread for you, but ATM my headache is being a bit nasty ... :(.

Thanks mate! yeh managed to find that thread with a few diff search terms. I added a message to it to check with MrTurbo if that will work for my model of Forry.
