Last week I drove in a large 4x4 event here in Holland. More then 700 4x4’s and 1 forester.
Part of the event was a 100km roadbook rally were you could chose in 3 difficulty levels. I opted for the medium (red) route. More then once i got the question if I was knowing that the red rout was only for 4x4s with minimum AT tyres, and a winch, muds and a lift were recommended. Well I have 2cm lift and General AT2’s so what is the problem? I know for sure that those guys thought that I was out of my mind..
Starting the route I saw several Hummer H1’s, dozens of lifted wranglers, LR’s and landcruisers. Did I make a mistake?

The route started easy with only sandy trails, Then the first special test. A narrow 2km long path in a forest where you had to drive over small trees and you had to made very sharp turns. Larger cars couldn’t make the turns and I needed a push when I got stuck on a tree but that was it, that gave me some confidence!

Second test was a track made in a muddy grassland with a few steep hills in them. No problem but my fozzy made the same noise as a F1 car after this. Checking under the car I saw nothing special and the exhaust was still hanging oke. Went on and the trails became really muddy. Sometimes we had to drive over meadows were the corn was just harvested. I entered one of those fields to slow and I got stuck, luckily a friend of mine in his landcruiser could pull me out. Second attempt with more speed was oke. Absolutely exiting! In one of those muddy fields I lost my rear muffler. We walked back but couldn’t find it anymore. It was very difficult to walk, my boots got stuck more than once.

At the last test, somebody asked me how the hell I got there, because he needed to lock all the diffs in his LR 90. I took the same path as he did with a little more speed the same style as when I ‘am driving in my buggy. This test was also no problem. When I got back at the terrain where the main event was held the grassland was partly so muddy due to all the cars who drove over it, that several 4x4 drivers choose to park their car at the entrance. I gave it a try and with a lot of noise and hitting the rev limiter in the second low gear I made it to the event terrain. Lucky me, because a lot of people were watching. My friend got stuck with his landcruiser, so in front of all those people I gave him a tow. Somebody of the spectators did put that on youtube.

We had a great day and showed all those 4x4 drivers that a fozzy can do more than they thought! :raspberry:
And honestly that car still surprises me!

Haha awesome :lildevil:

Try getting some alloys & you'll find it frees up more power :iconwink:

Well done, Casper!  :lildevil:

While I avoid that sort of stuff rather than look for it, I have noticed that the narrower width and smaller overall size of my Forester certainly helps getting between big things that do not want to move out of the way - like trees, for example ... :iconwink:.

My SWMBO's SH doesn't count, of course. It's HUGE in comparison to my SG. Feels that way, anyway :raz:.

BTW, I agree with NL's thoughts on the alloys. They also aren't mud traps like the steel rims.

Well done CFH! Looks like great fun!

Awesome trip report casper, enjoyed it very much. What stories you have now! And, by the sound of it... just the start of more adventures.

Best regards,

No, I don't think you were :)

Sounds like the way I sometimes drive offroad  :lildevil:

Well done & never ever underestimate what a Subi can do :woohoo:

Great report casperfromholland, I really enjoyed reading it :raz:

Cool report, if your Foz does that, it'll do the Sahara no problem :lildevil:

Thnx guys! Yes we are gonna drive more of these events and you'r right about the rims. They were packed with mud. When we were on the wat back on the highway it was dangerous to drive faster than 80km/p hour. We stopped at a parking place and tried to scrape of the mud. Back on the highway it was even worse. Stopped again took the jack and want to take off the wheels off to clean them, because we had to drive a 200km distance. Only to find out that the stock suby jack was too small. The lift and the higher tyres made the jack to small, never thought about that!:redface:
Drove home in a muddy shaky fozzy with 80km p/h as max speed.

I am allready checking the adds and you see 4 used audi rims for 150 euro. Finally something that is cheaper here than in australia!:raz:

I want to have an extra set of bigger mudtyres so that will be mounted on audi rims. What is the best ET rate for those rims?

Well done, very well, you must have been all smiles as the day went on.Thanks for representing the underdog.

You need to get Audi A3 rims for years '96-'03. These are the lightweight forged (strong) alloy ones that wont collect mud. They have ET +38, compared to OEM Subaru +48 so they sit out a bit further from the struts for better clearance

See here:
Guide to 15" Audi rims that fit over Subaru 4 pot brake

The thread lists the wheel nuts & hubcentric rings you'll need... :iconwink:
