Front end clunks over speed humps

Has never been there until the last 3 weeks!

For a while I been hearing a suspension clinck as I go over a slow speed bump and a clunk if I zip over them!

Now the is quite a heavy clunk when I go over them!

What could it be?

I have checked and it's not the bearing or the steering. Not noticeable with normal driving but it is very noticeable when going over a speed bump!

Seems on drivers side.

Looking at advice on what to check for looseness

Early SG with 140K kms, book serviced throughout, never been off the hard top or even through a big puddle, as new.

It's not your sway bar links is it ?
Thats what I'd be checking first.

Regards
Mr Turbo

Could well be a strut, Pigs.

Had to have two of them replaced in the front of the Camry, and they weren't even making any untoward noises! Just leaking, and buggered ...

Seems to me that MacPherson struts have a lifespan. Never had to have the struts replaced on Roo1 though.

Good thinking, Mr T. Roo2 also clunks when doing 'sharp' speed humps at around double the recommended speed ...

My SF is doing exactly the same thing. Its driving me nuts, cant work it out. It I have my foot on the clutch rest when this happens I can feel a significant jolt through the body work which is very concerning....
Only happens if I am canning it around a corner or hit a speed bump with normal amount of speed....

I developed a mystery clunk shortly after replacing my struts a while ago. Went through everything and rechecked torque on everything I touched. Ended up being my wheel lug nuts, and yes, I had rechecked them since putting the wheels back on the car, they just needed a third tightening.

Hi PigSTI
I would suggest Mr T is right I have this annoying noise on bumps and speed humps. When I checked underneath the drivers side sway bar link is definitely stuffed. I haven't replaced it as the dealers want $58 and the wreckers $44. For the moment I put up with it !

My bushing are not wonderful but I think they are ok. There is alot of stress on my swaybar links due to my lift. I really need to make/get some different ones.

I've the same sort of noise in my sf, seems like drivers side, so far I've worked out it isn't

  • wheel nuts
  • cv joint
  • strut/spring
  • swaybar links
  • wheel bearing
  • the exhaust
  • wishbone bushings
  • tie rod
  • ball joint
  • My imagination
When i work it out I'll let you know :rotfl:. Next on my list is the gearbox mount as its shredded.

Re-check your imagination as its not that easy to work out :iconwink:

So I White Lithium greased the open front torsion bar rubber bushes and the clunk has disappeared for now. Not sure why this has worked but hey!

Yeah, happened to me on the rear. Completely broke the link on the drivers side at the back. $90 odd bucks got me a new one fitted during the last service.
