Anyone done this?

I'm wanting Yokohama Geolander AT-S tyres in 225/70R15 or 215/75R15. Can't get them in Australia because we suck(lol) and no other tyre appeals to me or suits my needs. I'd rather not through money away on something I'm not happy with so I'd import 5 of the bad boys.... :twisted:

I can get the Geos in 225/70R15 for $170 each plus freight to Aus.
As far as I'm aware importing anything under $1000 you don't pay import tax? I am also unsure if I have to declare with Aus Customs either.
I found some info here but am having a hard time understanding it.

Could anyone shed some light on this for me please...

under $1000 no tax is correct but it includes the total cost i.e goods + freight charge.

I found a few people who aren't too happy with the wear life of the Coopers. Same goes for the Toyo Open Country A/T's.

I was taxed including freight last time I imported audio studio gear.

I'm in two minds on cooper tyres heard as many bad stories as good. Same with Mickey Thompson tyres. Might be dependant on how you drive. I know my mt fox God through fronts quicker just got to remember rotate every 10,000

I'm also looking at the AT-s 215/60R17s. I presently run 225/55R17s but the AT-s doesn't come in hat size so the 215/60s are the only legal one's in can get for driving in Qld.

I just contacted Tire Rack in the US but they say they aren't allowed to export Yokohamas to Australia.

Taza, where did you get that price from?

If you go higher profile on a smaller rim your tyres will bag out better for better grip offroad. Wouldnt surprise me if they're cheaper too.

There's a 215/65/16 thats the same diameter as the 225/55R17s or 225/70/16 which is 6% bigger (not sure if you have the 7% rule in Qld)https://www.rimsntires.com/tires.jsp?req=newsearch&sectionwidth=225&aspectratio=70&biddiameter=16

My understanding (and experience in importing computer and photographic equipment) is that the value of the goods is where the AU$1000 tax-free limit is applied against, but if they decide to charge tax/duty etc then that's applied to the goods AND the freight cost.

$950 goods and $950 freight: total cost should be $1900.
$1050 goods and $850 freight: total cost could be 1.1x 1900 == $2090.

But there are no guarantees that it will always be assessed that way. Are there other duties on tyres than just GST?
