I did some dune driving in my 2000 Forester a little while back and the tranny wouldnt go back into Hi range so I had to do about 100kms in Lo range. I only did it at about 80km/h.

Now.... Lo range is a lot winey-er (if thats a word) and when idleing in Lo but the main gear in neautral there is a gentle rattle.

The vehicle operates fine but I am concerned about the noises.

I was wondering do these setups have a seperate area for the transfer case that requires oil of its own. If so how do I check it for level and oil quality?

From what I've read, same oil is shared with transmission & front diff in a manual. When did you last change it - maybe swap it out anyway?

Any idea how to do this

kevin's right. same oil is used. under the front box you'll see a hex headed nut. place a bucket under and undo the nut. let it drain right out then put the nut back on and refill. i think it's about 3.5L's. when you pull the nut out have a good look at the nut to see if you have any bits of metal stuck to it as its magnetic, and strain the old oil to see if there's any bits in the bucket. have you tried to put it back in high when in 2nd,3rd or 4th gear?

Its back in Hi now.... After driving 100kms ish I tried for Hi and it slipped straight in. The problem was that It wouldnt seat into Hi quite all the way. As I'd let the clutch out it would pop out and then growl if I tried to put it back in again.

Its running fine now and has been in and out of Lo numerous times without any incident.....

Hi SKT

Have a look at the hi lo cable where it goes on to the gearbox stand on the right side with the bonnet up there is a cable on that side near the top on the box.
It has got a fork on the end of it that goes into the box on the fork there is a funny looking pin that holds the cable on, see if that is in tact the pin might have fallen out.
Don'T get mixed up with the clutch cable it is right on top of the box

It's working......

Kindy noisy, louder whine, and a rattle when sitting in Lo-Neutral....

I drained the tranny oil and found a bit of shrapnel in there... looks like a chewed up spacer or something.... gonna need a doc sooner than later I'd say.....
