From Melb., we made it on this 2nd attempt. Last year the track from Innamincka to the Park was closed due to rain.

We went to Arkaroola for a few days waiting for tracks to reopen after rain and took the East route to the Strezlecki track at the Mt Hopeless intersection. That leg was a bit hairy. 5 hours to cover 180 km. We bellied out at one point and spent an hour digging clay before a 4by came along and pulled us out in minutes. The damn satphone wouldn't connect then or over 2 weeks of tests apart from twice using the test number.

At the end of that stretch, just near the northern junction there was 200 m of bog and with engine revving and wheels spinning we got through by the skin of our teeth. Towing an 800 kg gross camper didn't make it easier but a troopy had got bogged going wide just before us. Foz 1, 4by 0!

We carried 20 l of extra fuel for Arkaroola to Innamincka but got there without it, with 3 l left in the tank.

Coongie Lake was a gem; a paradise for bird watchers, canoers & photographers.

We'd been told by locals to camp on the Cooper at the Kudriemitchie outstation and do day trips the 25 km to the lake and that's what we did. But the rig would've got over the dune on the Lakeside track to allow camping at water's edge.

All up it was fantastic. There were a heap of minor breakages and failures. We hit a roo at low speed so there's some cosmetic damage; bull bar called for on the next trip.

We ran Dueller 697's again and they continue to impress. The Foz is an '08 build year manual and the LSD and low range box were essential in bog conquering.

3,200 km in two weeks. Had to come back early due to illness in the family.

Sorry to hear about the family misfortune, Ern.

Terrific pics. I'm sure you have one or two more of your trip ...
How about posting a few more.

What size are the Duellers you're running?

[EDIT]

BTW, have you got a thread somewhere about your trailer and its specs/layout?

Great report & pics Sigmund :)

The last one looks just so relaxing

Sorry to hear that the trip was cut short by an illness in the family.
Hopefully it's nothing too serious & all is now well.

Regards
Mr Turbo

Sorry to hear about the illness. Hope everything is OK.

Sounds and looks like a great trip, nice and relaxing.

Thanks guys.

CT is a Johnno's light off road unit, 500 kg bare weight; Premier from memory, which we kitted up with 200 amp hour battery capacity and lekky brakes. Power supplied via alternator charging circuit with smart battery isolator; is enough for 5-6 days camping with 40l chest fridge and a couple of 1 amp hour lights.

Tyre size: 215 x 65 x 16. That's a bit bigger than legal in Vic but not if the Foz is classified as a 4WD. Don't give a flying f. about that. You can't get light truck construction in OEM size and you have to have that out there. This is our 4th trip in desert or semi-arid lands (all the std 'must do' tracks around the Centre and in the Channel Country).

More pics to come. Flickr Uploader has hung.

^^ Thanks for the info on the trailer and tyres, Ern.

^ And thanks for the info on the tyres too.

Will look at your piccies tomorrow, as too dozy tonight.

Looks like an interesting trip Ern; thanks

Here's a few post-trip reflections ...

We pushed it doing the wet 4WD-only track from Arkaroola to the Strez. Got stuck; got lucky. Will consider carrying Maxtrax next time; also get tough-minded about reducing the load in the CT.

We never drive at dawn or dusk to avoid hitting roos and have never come close. Oddly on this occasion we did nudge a roo and came close another time in broad daylight on the back road from Renmark into SA. Will fit protection for the next trip. Still debating what kind of roo bar. Prob. an extended loop nudge bar from ECB. Doesn't protect the headlights; just the radiator.

Putting the spare on the roof made a noticeable difference to the amount of rear sag and not a lot of difference to fuel consumption. And left the well for dirty gear like a wet tarp, C-gear mat and recovery gear.

We will in time upgrade to a hard floor CT but care has to be taken about weight. I'll load up the current soft floor job and take it to a public weighbridge just to get clear on how much the Foz has actually been towing.
