As im a short donkey and dont really want my spare on the roof, and would like the rear wheel well for a secondary battery I started looking at a rear carrier. After a quote from subaru extreme and some damage to my rear end when i fell off my chair, i thought how hard could it be to make one? So instead of buying a rear carrier i'm going to have a stab at fabricating my own. Thanks to the guys at the meet on the 25th I've not only gone green with envy, I've also had that dangerous thought of "hey i could make something like that myself". So with the uni break comming up and having some spare time It's time to grab the welder and see what i can knock up.

Instead of doing things things my usual way, I'm going to begin with the planning stage, and i'd like some input from you guys!

So far I've two criteria the carrier must fit under the original bumper, and cannot obstruct the rear lights. Covering the number plate is fine I'm happy to move that. My sketches so far involve welding a bracket onto the towbar with a pivot protruding up through the bumper bar to the the swing away carrier.

What sort of things would you guys like as part of a carrier? What do you think is abit of a gimick or useless?

This one caught my eye over on ExPo, might give you some ideas. They come from ya'lls neck of the globe https://www.landybitz.com.au/

Just a tip: it's a lot easier if you weld it up first and draw the plan later, after you know what it is looks like.

that is how they ended up with the elizabeth st royal pde round about after all

Gee you are good Dulagarl... I remember reading that thread and thinking it was a really clever mod, but do you think I could find it again!

Hadn't seen these pics. Looks awesome! I wished I had access to more equipement... or that I finished my course in aerospace construction :(

Thanks everyone, Dulagarl thanks alot that is a really good idea i just read through all of dellsfozz

some great ideas in there, i like his cutting the rear bumper for a better departure angle. I've got an old point piece crank and bb laying around too for that rear bar idea.

It needs lights and finishing but its a start. Not very pretty but functional.

Not very pretty but functional.
Functional is always the bottom line. If it isn't going to live there long term (aka permanently) there is always the approach I used:

which avoids covering the lights and only needs the plate relocated and lit. Unplug the trailer connector, undo two bolts and presto it's gone without trace. No holes, no cuts.

Thinks - maybe I need a third number plate to make that even quicker ....

I like to ideas guys, I ended up sidelining this project since I'm not sure how much longer im keeping the foz. Might still be on the books.
