Hi guys, I work at the biggest car auction here in holland. Today a'98 landrover defender 90 300tdi from a insurance compagny was brought to us. The car was stolen years a go and founded back in a barn. No reardoor, hood, no doors and chairs. For the rest sound and running. But stil i'am a little in love with that car. I like the looks of a LR and in contrast to a fozzy there are a lot of offroad parts for sale for a LR here in europe.

If i buy the LR i have to sell my fozzy. So i am in doubt.

Pro fozzy is that it is a better road going car and it is cheaper to run
Minus are the looks, i dont think that an old SF is not a really pretty looking car, and it isn't really good in deep mud.
Pro LR offroad capabilities, the looks, hard top
minus road handling, noisy, fuel consumption

I know that money wise it is wiser to keep my fozzy. So please talk my out of this...

Buy a mountain bike !

A Land Rover makes you feel adventurous, a Forester makes you feel normal...but is very adventurous and because we stay most of our time on tarmac, I would keep the Foz...(had a Land Rover previously)

Land Rovers, while fairly good offroad, are generally unreliable. I'd like to have one, too, but not as my only car (unless one of the newer model years).

Casperfromholland... many years ago I had a very old DeRanged Rover. If you are used to most importantly the reliability of your Subaru, you're right to talk yourself out of the land rover. You CHOOSE how big a mud puddle you play in, but you HAVE to go to work to earn money.... :-)

I understand your pain, I too am a closet landy lover and it is a problem that you must wrestle with for many years, because even after you make your decision you will always be thinking "what if"

And for everyone who says land rovers are unreliable :raz:, I have never had a Landrover let me down ever and I have owned a few, I traded my 95 TDI Discovery in when it had 295000km on it I bought it when it had 35000km on it and it never let me down, I had a series 3 ex army land rover with a land rover motor in it, I have no idea how many km it had on it but I did over 100000km in it and it never let me down, I had a 2004 V8 discovery which I did 80000km in it and it never let me down, I then had a 2006 v6 petrol discovery 3 which I did 70000km in and it never let me down. I have owned a variety of other series model land rovers which never let me down either. All of my landrovers were used off road at least once a month and I am not including dirt roads but I will say this, I serviced my cars when they required servicing.
Not that I have strong feelings on the subject

The landrover will not be enjoyable to drive on the road, it may not be as enjoyable as the forry offroad as it is more capable. To find a challenge offroad you will have to put it in situations not fit for your sole mode of transport.

As you live in Holland, where could you drive tough off road with a Land Rover ?

If you can buy it for cheap as you work at an auction, maybe you could make money, the 300 tdi is a very good model.

True, absolutely true..

Jf1sf5, In holland there are some enclosed areas where 4x4 events are held. Mostly on motorcross circuits. They are too tough (muddy) for my subi. At the most 4x4events my 2wd buggy is not allowed. There are nearly no buggy events in holland.
Selling my buggy? And take the LR instead? No. I have that car more then 25years, he is a part of the family.

Thnx guys, for your reactions. I keep the subi and wil go on to make it a little bit more offroadish. Also i don't want to miss this great forum..
