With the increased affordability & quality of various camcorders, I thought it time to start a thread on video shooting, editing, posting & any other vid related comments.

Having just got a GoPro Hero2 camera, I am building a collection of vids that need to be edited but I just dont know how! :(

What programs do others use to edit, esp freeware, & what pros & cons does each have? What tips can you give newbies like myself? Also how do you post to YouTube?

I use Sony Vegas on the pc and iMovie on the Mac, both are easy and fun to use. Most freeware has heavy limitations but Vegas can be had for free.....:iconwink:
Editing takes alot of time, so try to start with a editing suite that will see you through to the final results you want. Most editing software will walk you thru the Youtoobe posting process, as Scooby2 said go ahead and register on YT ahead of time.
Don't wait a long time to start editing, your collection of vids will grow quickly and it's hard to find the time to go back and edit the older stuff. Plus the more editing time you can do early on will help you see what is needed from the raw footage.

Here's a couple of things.
Take long duration shots, don't move from shot to shot too quickly. Quick, short shots leave very little to work with in post production.
Take plenty of "human interest" shots. The days candid moments, at break time and of the adventure parts, are easy to forget to film. That's something that's missing from my vids usually.
With the wide angle of the GP, you gotta be alot closer to the subject than you'd expect to get any action.
Be sure to make your vids "public".:)

Just downloaded Sony Vegas. Is there a free version or only a trial of the paid version?

Anyway, started using...buggered if I know what Im doing lol :(

i'd suggest vimeo over youtube ... they're much friendlier on your music selections !!
youtube will cancel anything with a song that people will know !!

also with the gopro, if you're shooting something where the camera/picture may be a little shakey it pays to have something in the frame that the cameras fixed securely to, this will draw your attention from the shakeyness of the background and make it more watchable

Nacha, I hear ya on the info overload! It depends on where the video will be used, YT or DVD for instance. Call me a simpleton but I always just use the "share to YT" option in the esw. I've read where better quality can be achieved by exporting to Quicktime and blah blah blah, thats as far as I've gotten.
When I plan to use my video in other ways than YT, I'll have to get serious about the details, which I despise!
