Hey all!! im new and was reffered to this site by a member from subaruforester.org. Im in search of answeres and knowlage about the forester and outback. I will be traveling to the mountains in colorado and wyoming and going on some of the jeep trails with my jeep buddys. I live in kansas and only have the dirt roads and flooding here. Ill just list some of my questions!! thanks to everyone who replys and ill asorb as much as i can!! LOL

which is better off road and has better capabilities forester or outback

what is the difference between the two

auto or manual

any general info

LOL!! hey nipper! how long have you been a member on this site?? I thought i had it all figured out about buyin an outback but then i saw forester. Now i dont know what to do!!! AHHHH ive never been this torn between cars!!

probably the forester is better as it has a slightly shorter wheel base, shorter over hang on the boot and it is lighter. BUT my outback has been places with foresters where a lot people wouldn't take their cruisers:)

I have not driven an 09 Forrie, but as for previous models the Outback is more refined but with greater overhangs which affect its offroad ability a bit more. Outback has a bit more spave for stuff in the back as well. I would only ever buy a manual, but that's me and others swear that autos are better. I like them both but I ended up buying the Forrie. Your requirements might be different

Well if your going with jeep guys - just get a Liberty itll have almost the same clearance haha

depends what your doing and how much space you want - I drive an OB and love it but I dont think there is any question the forrie is more capable off road due to wheel base and entry exit angles... I cant go past the space in the OB - carries all my camping BS comfortably

I've had both and the Foz is better off-road. I prefer auto offroad (there is a lengthy discussion on SF.org re Auto Vs Manual.) If the manual came with a usable low range it may change my preference - but probably not :iconwink:

The Forester has a slightly shorter wheelbase, which will assist in giving you a better ramp over. (less chance of getting hung up). The Outback does have longer overhangs than the Forester aswell, which will lessen your approach & departure angles.
As to choosing a manual or an auto, well thats a matter of opinion. I have a manual & am very happy with it, there have been times when I'd wished I had an auto though, but for the majority of it I'm glad I have the manual.

Regards
Mr Turbo
