Went out to the beach and dunes with Stilson, Beej, Davidov and myself today....

Was an awesome day testing out the soobs as we all haven't been in ages and had the addition of Beej!
Only I got bogged once but was recovered by my awesome Maxtrax.... but unfortunately I ended the day early for us all as my foz SNAPPED a spring!!! :surprised:

really!! I couldn't believe it, never heard of anything like that happening before! I've been running these Dobinson springs for about 18 months without issue..

Trying to get part of the broken spring out, otherwise it would slice the tyre open :( we got it out though.

Our bush mechanics and BeeJ's great skills with the cable ties :iconwink:
It worked though and got me home 30km away... didn't come out of the strut seat once :)

They are still under their 2 year warranty period so I hope the front two will be replaced, but we'll see...

Good day out guys,

I came back up again to camp and fish.

Never seen anything like it with regards to your spring failure, excellent work babying it back to civilisation. Hope they come good with the warranty.

Holy :censored: taza, that's a huge failure suspension wise

Glad you guys weren't hurt & were able to get home, with the aid of some good bush mechanics.

It will be interesting to see what Dobinson have to say. Hopefully they will honour their warranty :)

Regards
Mr Turbo

Taza, i think your Foz has a devil in it...!

Taza you seem to have a few more unique and interesting failures than other people do

Have you considered going to a pro suspension place to have the requirements for you car properly looked at? I personally don't think off the shelf springs really suit people with lifted vehicles carry a lot of weight. A good suspension place can do a set of custom made springs for maybe $3-400 which will be tailored to your car, the weight it carries and the sort of driving it does.

Brilliant job with the cable ties

It does...the driver lol :rotfl:

I dont think you'll have any probs with the warranty...as long as you dont mention what you do with your Foz lol. A spring breakage is a catastrophic failure & you would have every right to be very :censored: off! At the wrong time it could have sent you straight into oncoming traffic!:shake:

You could mention "to my knowledge King Springs have never had a failure of this kind"!!

It might be wise to clean your Foz a little, remove the evidence of your offroad exploits as it were :iconwink:

Well tonight I contacted Dobinson direct... my springs are still under their 24month warranty so I'm now waiting to hear what they have to say.

But a spring breaking, comeon

Yeah I know :iconwink: This certainly is an odd one though! Lucky I wasn't on the freeway doing 100km/hr or I may not be here right now..

Something I am going to look into once I get my EJ25 in(a few more weeks I have to wait)..

Got me 40km home, so I can't complain. A spring breaking is the last thing I would ever expect to break though. Ever!

They have actually, just not in a Subaru that I know of. I was researching about it..

I just pulled the whole strut out and took the lift block off. I've sent Dobinson an email direct but might go into the shop where I got them from and take the strut in tomorrow.

Bad luck taza! Dobinson have been around a long time and have a good reputation so I imagine you shouldn't have a problem getting a replacement.

Well I've heard back from Dobinson within a few hours of them opening (EST) and they want some more photo's but the guy reckons that they will most likely replace both front springs and both front struts

That would be nice as both my front struts are absolutely knackered, but I won't hold my breath. He said it is very uncommon to have the springs physically snap into 2 pieces, even when under extreme conditions.

I'm glad they're responding well, a total spring failure is pretty serious & could have had disastrous consequences. They would need to replace the springs as a pair & replacing the struts as a goodwill gesture is definitely a good move on their part & a nice bonus for you :iconwink:

I reckon!

Your not wrong :poke:

It sure is

i rarely ever see coil sprigs break like that.. but leaf springs i see snap all the time.. usually when jumping or wrapping them or other reasons.

I'd be asking them to replace your struts with genuine Subaru KYB.

Well I heard back yesterday from them.
They are getting two front springs made on order(non in stock) and will be overnight air freighting them over to WA! They will replace the front drivers side shock with a brand new KYB unit(which is what I want), I have bought a new passengers side unit to have fitted at the same time(They wouldn't replace that as it wasn't damaged, fair enough).
They contacted on of their resellers in WA(10mins from my house actually) and have organized for them to install both shocks and springs free of charge. Due to having to make the springs on order for my Foz they apologized for the delay and said the springs should reach Perth by early next week.

Very happy with their service and warranty. They have gone out of their way to help me and all this has been sorted out in less than 3 days! I'd highly recommend them and their products.

Dobinson sponsor some candidates in the Dakar Rally and their products hold upto that challenge. They said it was a manufacturing defect and they were surprised it lasted this long.

Can't wait to get my beast back on the road :raspberry:

Great outcome! Well done Dobinson! A friend of mine is about to have a suspension makeover at Dobinson in Sydney so it's great to know they do stand behind their products.
