Matt's Foz Recovery and Improvement!

Hey everyone,

So this is my first post in almost six months I think. The last any of you would have heard of my Foz was after tackling the Gentle Annie track in Bunyip, which was a fairly extreme day that resulted in horrendous exhaust damage to the car, the front grill was ripped off and I also sustained some pretty serious panel damage.

Upon returning to the forum I thought a good thread would be to start a journal of both my Forester's recovery from it's injuries and it's coming improvements. I am planning to do a fairly major trip in July/August, so hopefully I can have it running 110% by then.

The exhaust has now been repaired. The diagnosis from the good people at Combined Servicing in Clayton was that the centre section of the exhaust was pretty much non-existent. It was beaten up and corroded and more or less destroyed. So that was replaced, and now the whole street doesn't hear it when I return home. In the lead up to getting the exhaust fixed, the car was also misfiring fairly badly, costing me a lot of power and eventually getting to the point where I had to use low range to take off at steep intersections. Very scary and not in any way safe. So with a new set of spark plugs and one of the leads replaced, the car is now running significantly better but is still not in the shape I would like it to be. I am going to investigate replacing the rest of the leads because it is still misfiring, and it has a bit of a cough when I first turn the key in the ignition. I'm not sure if that's a related problem or if it's something else entirely (does anyone have any ideas)?

It is due for a service in 3000 kilometres so I will get the mechanic to go over the whole car fairly thoroughly then and see what else might need to get fixed up to get it running perfectly. In addition to all this, I am planning to add several mods between now and July, the main ones I have in mind being:

- Roof storage system
- Snorkel
- Rear spare wheel and jerry can holder
- New tyres
- New driving lights

I would also like to consider turbo-charging it at some stage, but I don't know a whole lot about that and how much it costs, so if anyone has any info please shoot it my way.

I'll get some photos of the car up soon too. Anyway, it is good to be back on ORS, and I look forward to getting offroad with some of you again soon, once my Foz is back in shape!

Great to see you back FozzyMatt :raz:

Looking forward to seeing your Forry's progression in the next couple of months or so.

Regards
Mr Trubo

Welcome back FozzyMatt!!!

Glad your getting things sorted out, sounds like better days down the road.

Welcome back Matt...

Got any pics of your foz to put in your journal?

With the whole turbo charging thing... I will put it straight out for you; there is NO cheap way to gain more power. It's pointless turboing an N/A engine, you are better off to sell the car and buy a turbo one or do a full engine conversion. This will cost onwards of $5000. If your foz is not the limited, but base model and doesn't have ABS then you can do a custom supercharger install. The ABS stopped me as my foz is a limited model with it. Or you can go the route I'm going and use a 2.5l block. Making your foz a 2.5l over 2.0l..

Are you going to buy a Subaxtreme rear wheel/jerry can carrier? They are around $4000... or make one.
Change the rest of the leads and then that'll tell you if that's the problem with the misfiring.. :iconwink:

Was the whole exhaust damaged? Or just the muffler? Did you get a new cat, headers, mid section or what?

Taza,

My foz isn't the limited, so doesnt have the ABS. What is involved in upgrading to the 2.5l? Because that is an option I'm definitely happy to consider.

As for the spare wheel and Jerry can carrier, I know a guy who can make me one and will do so for less than $1000, so a slightly cheaper option than the subaztreme one haha.

The centre section of the exhaust was damaged and replaced.

Okay, so I replaced the leads today, and the car is running completely normal. Woohoo! I'd almost forgotten how smooth it could run.

And here are some images of my car on it's adventures prior to the severe damage it endured. As I add new mods to the car I will upload more photos of it. The next thing I plan to do with the car is replace the tyres. The Coopers are barely roadworthy now, and I do want some more road-friendly all-terrains so at this stage I am looking at Bridgestone Dueller ATs.

PS I am still not 100% on how to get photos to work so if they don't work, sorry!

There you go mate, I clicked on the picture and opened it as a medium 800, then right click on the picture and it gives you a few options. choose copy image URL then come back here and insert it like normal

This is the way I'd go...& prob will one day when my engine gets tired...heaps of low down torque, more than enough for a lightweight Foz

Awesome :monkeydance:

Keep away from Crapstones. I had them on my Foz & ripped em off as fast as I could!!!

For an A/T thats great onroad as well as off, its hard to beat the Yokohama Geolander ATs. AFAIK its the only AT using silica. A HUGE improvement onroad over the Bridgestone Dueller HT I had on, esp in the wet. A big surprise for an A/T to outperform a H/T! & you've seen em offroad. Not as good as BFGs in the mud, but then the BFGs cant compete on the blacktop. For mine, the Geolander AT-s are the best on/offroad compromise you can get. Plus they have a factory puncture warranty

Yeah I must admit I have been impressed by your tyres offroad. I'll have to look into them. Mind you, when I bought my foz I had Bridgestone fuelled hts on it and I took them to places that were hardly on-road and I found them to be pretty solid. Maybe I just got lucky?

The Bridgestone's seem to be a bit hit and miss, some people love em, the rest hate them. If I had the money to burn I'd be putting Mickey T ATZ 4 ribs on my forester, but I just can't justify them for the little I'll use em. I'm currently looking at Toyo OP AT's, seem to be a good tyre from what I've read and my mate is having a good run out of his Open Country MT's.

OK, so first update is the tyres. I did say I was going to go with AT's instead of muddies this time around, but after seeing Venom's Kumhos advertised on this forum and then finding out I could get them fairly cheaply, temptation just overcame me and here I find myself once again with big, thick muddies on the car.

They are the Kumho KL71 in 215/75 R15, which is the same size as the Cooper STT's that I had on previously. As you can see from the pic below, however, they are very, very close to the rear strut. I don't think they're quite rubbing because I don't feel any heat between them when I touch the tyre or the strut after driving, but does anyone know if this is an issue and if so if there is a solution to it? Also, given that the Coopers were the same size and didn't rub, any idea why this could be happening? I did buy the Coopers second hand with probably about 70% of their tread, so perhaps it was simply the difference in tread size that made the difference.

Regardless, the car is driving fine so it doesn't seem to be affecting the handling in any way. In fact it is driving superbly since it was well overdue for a wheel balance
