This happened a few months ago**

So it was a great november evening with a few friends and our subarus... we meet at a dennys at about 9pm and were gonna go for a fun little drive out to Blue Jay Camp ground off of Ortega highway. My friends have a 07 wrx, 05 fxt, 02 wrx, 09 wrx... needless to say I hopped in one of their cars for the drive:)

The way out there was great! The road is almost like a paved single track with some fun turns and not another car or house in sight.

We hung out right by the camp ground at the top of the mountain for about an hour and a half. It was a full moon so the sky looked rad and we were all just hanging out talking. (there was no i repeat NO alcohol or drugs involved. 2 of them are sober)

(11:30pm) For the way back we decided to take the "back way" which none of us had ever taken. I hopped in the 02 WRX and off down the road we went. Coming down the narrow service road (along the side of the mountain) we came to the first major turn and thats where the pavement ended... going maybe 20mph my friend tried to make the turn but we started to loose control and began sliding sideways, right off the side of the road.

Right as we went off I knew we were in for a dangerous ride. We rolled about 4-7 (estimate from the tower) times off the side of the road before coming to a stop roughly 120+ft from the road. While rolling my friend (the driver) asked me 3 times if I was still okay! I was just silent and doing my best to stay low in my seat. Glass and dirt was flying everywhere as we were rolling.

We came to a stop on my side of the car. With the car still running, he shut it off imediatly and we both gathered ourselves and climbed out of the driver side window. We got to the ground and checked eachother usiny me cell phone light for any injuries... to both of our surprise we were completely uninjured! so we grabbed a couple of things and began hiking back up the very steep hill, there were points where we had to use our hands to climb it.

Only small glass cuts on our hands and... along my waist from it getting caught in my pants.

Our friends who were following behind us in there cars and didn't see us go off the edge, so they kept driving down the mountain until they got to the bottom and realized that we were missing. As they raced back up the hill I got ahold of one of them and let him know what happened and that we were okay. Naturally he was freaking out and wanted to call an ambulance, but i talked him out of it because ambulances are expensive as he** and we were not injured.

The airbags never deployed, and probably to our advantage. They would have caused the only injuries.

We are very lucky to be alive and unscathed. I thank God for keeping us safe. And the extremely well built subaru!

well here is what you are all waiting for! some pictures...

the road is up behind the tree at the top right of this picture.

this is at the yard it was towed to the next day. It looks pretty good for rolling 4-7 times.

Damn. You are lucky to have walked away from that not injured. I had a pretty similar experience with walking away unscathed. I fell asleep at the wheel and slammed head on into a telephone pole going 40 mph. I walked away with a bruise from the seat belt and a headache.

That must've been one helluva ride, great that y'all came out so uninjured! Sucks about the car though...
Thanks for postin' as a reminder as to what can happen.

Struth Garrett!

You can be damn lucky; and "unlucky" too, if you get my drift ...

Lessons:

1) never drive fast (defined as "fast for unknown circumstances/conditions") when on any unfamiliar road ...

2) hope your insurance covered it all properly.

I reckon that your air bags didn't deploy because none of the corners of the vehicle seem to have taken much of a hit. The control systems were relatively primitive 10 years ago ...

A somewhat more modern vehicles such as even my 2006 Fox has sensors all around the passenger cell, as well as the direct bump sensors around the vehicle. SWMBO's 2009 Fox is even more bristling with them ....

For all that, the car has done what it should do, protect you both from serious injury or death. In Oz, we routinely see much more modern vehicles than yours spread all over the countryside after far lesser prangs than yours!
Bloody air bags and pre-tensioner seat belts aren't much flaming use if their mounting points are 5 metres away ...

I am damn lucky!

It was not my car, nor was I driving but his insurance covered the whole thing and actually gave him more than he payed for it...

Driving fast is silly, Im the kind of guy who goes under or at the speed limit on the freeway just to save gas haha:)

As for the airbags I am stoked they didn't go off... I'm sure I would have had a broken nose or arm if they did. Those things hurt! They save lives in certain situations, but in this one the design of the car did a great job

G'day again Garrett

Yeah, I should have remembered that it wasn't your car. Glad your mate was properly insured, even so.

The main point about the later 2 stage front, side and curtain air bags and the active head rests is that they locate your head in accidents like this. The main risk after death or serious bodily injury is actually whiplash from your head wobbling all over the place!

I spent a very uncomfortable couple of years in a soft neck brace from such an injury. Caused by avoiding a Bogong moth while driving my feet ... :(

Oh gosh! A brace sounds miserable!

Yeah I definitely felt a little sore the next few days, but I think was helped me was that I grabbed the chest strap of the seat belt and pulled it tight, which pulled me lower in the seat and I held myself pretty stable while we were rolling.
I just knew I didn't want the roof to crush in on my head or to have an arm go out the window and get crushed.

Pretty frightening experience all round.

I had a couple in my youth (bloody long time ago ... ). Worst was being run off the road by a semi. We were doing around 95+ mph ...

If it hadn't been for the strength of the car we were in (Austin 1800), we would both have been killed. Our family's car, but I wasn't driving.

The car was able to be repaired!

Being involved in this sort of thing makes one a LOT more safety conscious, IMNSHO :poke:.

Holy :censored: garrettG. That really is a wreck

I'm so glad you guys made it out unscathed & in one piece :)

Regards
Mr Turbo

So glad y'all made it out uninjured!!!

One of the best reasons to drive a Subie, safety.

Lucky boys but it still looks drivable.

Crazy times!

Great to know that you both were able to scramble back up the track!

Pity about that corner though, looks like it was once a wicked WRX - but at the same time it did it's job in looking after you.

Keep on wheeling!

Cheers

Bennie

PS - I was going to say keep on rollin' as in the tyres, but thought that might be read the wrong way :rolleyessarcastic:

Glad you guys got out of that OK (seriously), seeing that you did I'll have to say...now that's what I call an Offroad Subaru (rimshot)

Yes, glad to see you made it out OK! The Subie certainly did its job of protecting you guys!

I am glad everyone came out ok.

Most of the should rub out, the roof dent, some filler.

But never ever go wheelin down strange roads at night unless oyu have proper day light. Even 20mph is too fast at night. Heck, even if you know the road sometimes it is not a good idea at night.

i guess since the insurance covered it you are safe from the cirling subaru parts vultures

Very glad you both are OK. Yet another testament to the Subaru's safety...all those layers of steel in the pillars plus roof & floor really make a Subie one of the safest cars in a rollover.

Most of the (EDIT: dents) should rub out, the roof dent, some filler.

haha that cracks me up

Some body filler, few suspension repairs & off you go! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

heh, heh ... way off road.

punning aside, impressed with the beating the car took while keeping you from harm!

m.

Haha yeah definitely more than planned;)

I was impressed with how good the car looked! I thought it would have been mangled... We flipped alot!

All danger and reality aside, I'm sure it would have been a fun ride... It sure was adrenalin pumping! I got out of the car ready to run a mile!

It is weird that I never was scared or anything I was just kind of waiting for when we were gonna stop.
