Anyone cluey on Ctek chargers?? I got a Ctek M300 off Gumtree for $200 to replace the XMS10 that was knocked off on my recent fishing trip.
This is a marine spec 25amp fully auto model. It is supposed to know what sort of battery you are charging and does all sorts of stuff.
I put my 100amp AGM battery on to give it a rev up and i'm not sure what the hell is going on. I have read the manual but still not sure how it works. It appears to me that it has in fact drained the battery as when the bloke came around to have a look at the trolling motor i was selling it would not work when i connected it to the battery.
The day before i used the same battery before charging it and the motor worked fine.
We took the motor out to the guys car and connected it to the battery and all was good.
The manusl does say something about testing the discharge of the battery but surley it would not run it down and then recharge it...would it?

A lot of chargers do exactly this to determine the condition of the battery prior to charging it.

The one I have some familiarity with measures the internal resistance of the (NiCad/NiMH) cell/s before deciding what to do ...

The person who wrote the manual - well; let's leave it at that, shall we?

Not sure what is going on with this really. It has automatic cut out and figures out what to do and how to charge. POSSIBLY a clever little bugger but it was a bit strange that the motor would not run.
After i posted and went back and checked it it had the 'maintainence' light on which should mean it is fully charged and all is good.
I'll get my mate to check the volts on the battery later.
Being a 25amp charger i guess it would not take long to get some juice into the battery.

just recently had some shenanigans with a battery charger ourselves. Apparently, some of them you have to "set" to the particular setting you want it to "automatically" do and it does it from then on... If it is designed for a marine battery, I think from memory (a long time ago ....) they are designed to be completely drained before re-charging... so what you've had happen would be right.

CTEK chargers are pretty good chargers hey one of the best out there IMO, I've got the MXS5.0 there all pretty easy to use..

The CTEK are what they call smart chargers and they will charge your battery in 8 different steps, and most of the time they will run the battery flat 1st and run through the charging process..

What mode are you charging the battery on?

This one is a bit of a beast. Quite a bit larger than the xms10 i had with different controls on the mode setting. With the xms10 i could scroll through with the mode button and select...for example...the AGM battery setting and then the 8 lights on the top of the charger would light up as the charger went through the stages.
This one is different,as is the xms15. With the mode i just select...Normal or recondition or float. Thats it.
Apparently it determines what sort of battery is charging and adjusts itself.
On the top there are only 4 lights for normal charging and a light for reconditioning if that has been selected via mode.
It is an 8 step charger so as it is going through the lights it must be doing different things at each stage which is pretty much what the manual said.
I won't be able to tell how it went until i can check the voltage on the battery or use the battery with the trolling motor.
The test light on the battery case is saying the battery is fully charged.
I know this is not that accurate but it does give you an idea as i have often had these lights down to 1 or 2 showing after a hard days fishing.
