I just compiled this thread over the past hour+ (while my 10 month old was napping, and now he's stirring) so sorry to redirect and be short by not retyping or copy-pasting here in a unique report, and I know you all deserve that respect ;) BUT I'm just going to tack the link in here.

Long story short I wheeled my (well and tastefully modified) 95 legacy with two 4" lifted FJ80s and a 3" lifted FJ cruiser, tackling Lockhart Basin ( north to south) IN A DAY!!

Enjoy!!

Awesome read. Love seeing your little Subie with those giants towering above it...David v Goliath! :monkeydance:

Whats the deal with the Cruiser with measles? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Pity bout the half shaft. But the fact you made it up a track like that at all is a testament to our lil Subies & obviously some driver skill too :iconwink:

 THX

Ahh the cruiser (lexus) with the spots... they're actually hundreds of tiny skull and crossbones stickers.

And thanks! Yeah the half shaft was failing for over a year and it's just blind luck it gave up the ghost after the most technical part of the trail...

Yeah it was a test to be sure (for both car and driver), a bit more rock stacking on a couple runouts would have made it possible to run it clean without the two break-over highcenters I had. . . :lildevil:

Different lol :iconwink:

But isnt that always the way...or during! lol

Well SuperRu, I enjoyed your story very much. Great to see a Doer not a Gunnadoer! I can see in the picture of the three year olds exactly what they were talking about and how passionate they were also about the trip!

Thanks for the bump, I know I saw it when you first posted, but I never made it through the whole thread.

Awesome trip!!! Looks like it was a great day, and excellent photos!!! Your car is rockin'.

Yeah mate! LORD among flies

Some great pics there!

I think it's now time we work on a much better low range that'll make a subi box up there with the big 4wd's "true 4wd" transfer cases. It's very technical though and will probably always remain a pipe dream :(

Cheers

:lildevil: Might you be alluding to a FT AWD, with locking center diff running 4.11s or 4.44s and 1.59:1 low and VLSD front with CLSD rear, possibly behind an EG33?? :lildevil:

'cause that's what MY pipe dream looks like!

BTW, pipe dream is a pretty sweet ride, not 10 minutes' drive from my front door, done on bike door-to-door in under 2 hours. Just sayin' :monkeydance:

Nah. The "real" transfer case I've got in mind really needs a whole other thread about it. But since you've asked - it's a housed transfer case that would slot in between the front half cases and the rear housing of the centre diff. In this would be a decent low range ratio, something near 2:1 (with other options as well) that is very similar in design to the dual range that Subaru has on the input shaft. Built into the system would be a device that also locks the pinion shaft to the gearbox output shaft - this would lock the centre diff.

Ultimately you would have AWD centre lsd traction in all on-road conditions with the added off-road advantage of awesome low range and a locking centre diff. The design would be setup so that you basically unbolt the rear housing, bolt this transfer case on the half cases then the rear casing on the back of that. Issues: mainly the gear selector shaft internally, it's going to change some stuff in there - and the tail shaft would need to be shortened as would the gear linkages.

Now, if you had a dual range gearbox you'd have rock crawling gears with both low ranges engaged - something I'd love to have. I know this will stir the pot with others but I don't care about that, it's something I would love to achieve but I think it's really outside my mechanical, fabrication, engineering and money making skills so it'll never happen. Even better would be to build this for the 6 speed - that'd be a sweet combination!

And I love your take on "pipe dream"! Looks like a bit of fun! Unfortunately for me I've moved to a town that's got nothing but flat all around it - nearest hill (non 4wd'n too) is about 40mins away!!

If this stirs more questions for you Suparu, PM me ;)

Cheers

Whoa, now you're talkin'!!
A friend (the guy who built my bumper) had a low low in a sub-framed, built suby crawler (took it on the rubicon years ago), I think it was Nissan transfer-cased. He told me all about it WAAAY Before I knew anything about it all (gearing, etc. etc.). I think it was a nissan x-fer case in front of the suby EA82 4x4?? not sure, but I like the complicated sounding idea you have there, keeping AWD is key in my world!!
